Windber hospital dropping obstetrics program

WINDBER — Barely 18 months after ribbon-cutting ceremonies for an expanded nursery, Windber Medical Center is dropping its maternity program.

"It is with heavy hearts that we inform the community that Windber Medical Center will be discontinuing its obstetric services," Judge David Klementik, board chairman, said today in a news release.

The difficult decision was prompted by a change in direction by the obstetric-gynecology practice of Drs. Amy Anderson’s and Pradeep Kulkarni’s and nurse practitioner Lisa Drennan.

The long-time baby doctors have publicly expressed their desire to focus on the gynecology needs of the community.

Check back here and in Wednesday’s editions of The Tribune-Democrat for more details on the hospital’s arrangements for current patients and for its employees affected by the shutdown.
