Tomahawks trade for local player

JOHNSTOWN — The Johnstown Tomahawks should have a bit more of a local look to them this weekend.

The North American Hockey League Junior A Tier II team traded for former Westmont Hilltop standout Corey Schafer. The 18-year-old forward has been added to the Tomahawks roster, but is not expected to arrive in Johnstown in time for tonight’s home game with the Port Huron Fighting Falcons. The two teams play again Saturday, while the Soo Eagles visit Cambria County War Memorial Arena on Sunday.

Schafer played 19 games with the Wichita Falls Wildcats. He did not score a goal but had three assists and 25 penalty minutes for the Wildcats, who are in fifth place in the six-team NAHL South Division. He was a minus-5 for the season.

“Yes its true.. im officially a Johnstown Tomahawk,” Schafer said on his Twitter account. A previous tweet said “Traded to the Johnstown Tomahawks #excited.”

The Tomahawks, who are playing their inaugural season in Johnstown, already have one local player in Cody Boyd. Boyd, the son of Tomahawks general manager and former Johnstown Chief Rick Boyd, lives in Richland Township.

Johnstown, which has lost four consecutive games and sits in fourth place in the NAHL North, traded defenseman Kristaps Bazevics to Wichita Falls.

Rick Boyd has been busy since Sunday’s 8-1 loss at Michigan capped a three-game weekend sweep at the hands of the Warriors. He brought in Mitch Hall, a 19-year-old defenseman from St. Cloud, Minn., in a trade with the Jamestown Ironmen. The Tomahawks’ roster also now includes Dakoda Menslage, a 17-year-old defenseman from Orleans, Mass., who had been playing with Granite City of the NA3HL.

Hall played in 22 games with the Ironmen, scoring a goal and adding two assists. He was a plus-6 with 8 penalty minutes.

Menslage played 20 games in the NA3HL, with two goals and nine assists. He was a plus-15 in the Tier III league.
