Forest Hills bounces back

EBENSBURG — Special teams proved to be very special for Forest Hills as they rebounded off a tough loss last week to Bishop McCort. It did not take long for the Rangers to take a lead over Bishop Carroll and never look back.

Forest Hills’ Shareef Blough took the opening kickoff for an 88-yard touchdown. Blough hit the middle blocking wedge, bolted to his right, and outraced a few Huskies along the sideline for the score.

“Shareef is capable of making a big play,” said Forest Hills head coach Don Bailey. “He took the opening kickoff for a touchdown, certainly setting the tone for the game. We responded after a tough loss last week.”

“Special teams killed us today,” said Bishop Carroll head coach Greg Snyder. “Three big returns, three touchdowns off those long returns. It hurts.”

Bishop Carroll controlled the ball throughout the first quarter. The Huskies ran 20 plays, compared to Forest Hills’ six plays. They put together drives that spanned nine and 11 plays but stalled on fourth down at the Rangers’ 31- and 23-yard line, respectively. They converted only three third-down opportunities in falling to 0-3.

In the second quarter, Forest Hills wide receiver Jared Shope sparked a touchdown drive with a 33-yard punt return to the Huskies’ 28-yard line. Shope then caught a pass for 14 yards the first play of the drive, and was followed by two Joe Donoughe runs to finish a quick, three-play scoring drive.

Donoughe scored on a quarterback sneak from the 2-yard line to go up 12-0, failing on a conversion pass. Forest Hills took advantage of three first-half turnovers from Bishop Carroll.

Bishop Carroll fumbled on the first snap of the ensuing drive. Forest Hills answered 58 seconds later on only four plays. Donoughe rolled to his right and found Doltyn Snedden on a post-corner route in the back right corner of the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown. Dououghe found Snedden for the two-point conversion to take a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Shope sparked another scoring drive with a 56-yard punt return to the Huskies’ 5-yard line. Two plays later, freshman fullback Ian Wieczorek found the end zone from 6 yards out to go up 27-0. Donoughe kicked the extra point to finish the scoring with 8:22 left in the third quarter.

Bishop Carroll held Forest Hills’ strong running game to only 81 yards. Shawn Dell (255 yards the first two weeks) was held to only 12 yards on seven rushes. The Rangers turned to the passing game behind Donoughe’s strong and accurate arm. He finished 13-for-16, completing eight in a row, for 184 yards and a touchdown.

“We got some skill players,” Bailey said. “Joe’s off to a real good start. He worked hard in practice and had a good game tonight.”

“The kids never gave up,” Snyder said of his young Huskies team, having only three seniors on the roster. “They fought the whole way through. They played inspired football.”

The schedule will not get any easier for the Huskies, as they play at Penn Cambria next week.

Bishop Carroll defeated in quarterfinal
In a tough battle against the undefeated Williamson High School, the Bishop Carroll girls’ volleyball fell to the Warriors, 3-1 in the PIAA state quarterfinals held at State College High School on Saturday.
Bishop Carroll took an early 15-11 lead in the first set with kills from sophomore Janelle Gueguen, junior Nicole Woomer and junior Rachel Kwisnek. A kill by junior middle hitter Sarah Gomish put the Huskies in position for set point, 22-24. A Williamson error closed out the set for the Huskies, 22-25.

Bishop Carroll defeats North Star
Bishop Carroll’s Sarah Gomish was unhappy with her play in Saturday’s District 6 Class A title game loss to Penns Manor.
The junior middle hitter more than made up for that lapse on Tuesday, registering 26 kills and 16 service points as the Huskies defeated District 5 champion North Star in PIAA first-round action. Carroll won in straight sets 25-13, 25-17, 25-19.
