Bishop Carroll defeated in quarterfinal

STATE COLLEGE — In a tough battle against the undefeated Williamson High School, the Bishop Carroll girls’ volleyball fell to the Warriors, 3-1 in the PIAA state quarterfinals held at State College High School on Saturday.

Bishop Carroll took an early 15-11 lead in the first set with kills from sophomore Janelle Gueguen, junior Nicole Woomer and junior Rachel Kwisnek. A kill by junior middle hitter Sarah Gomish put the Huskies in position for set point, 22-24. A Williamson error closed out the set for the Huskies, 22-25.

Williamson started the second set strong, taking a quick 4-0 lead. As Bishop Carroll was never able to catch up, Williamson won the second set, 25-15.

“For some reason, we always do this ‘Oh,  wait a minute’ in the second set. And that second set’s really what gave credit to Williamson,” Bishop Carroll coach Joe Skura said.

Williamson took a 5-3 lead early in the third set, but Bishop Carroll tied the score at 6-6 with a block made by Gomish and a kill recorded by Gueguen. After numerous back-and-forth attacks, Williamson took the set, 30-28.

“I knew our girls weren’t going to give up in the third set. We never do, even if we lose one. We started strong in the third set, carried it back and forth. I think we started off down in the beginning, but we just did not finish that,” Skura said.

Two instant Williamson kills gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead at the start of the fourth set. Persistent attacks by both Bishop Carroll and Williamson kept the score close throughout the rest of the fourth set, but the Warriors came out on top, 25-22, advancing to the state semifinals.

Gueguen finished the match with 46 assists. Gomish recorded 33 kills, while strong serving from junior Allyson Przybys added 10 service points to the Huskies stats.

As this was the first time at the state quarterfinals for Bishop Carroll, emotions ran high at the end of the match.

“I think that’s the story of our team, a very emotional team that puts their heart on line every game, no matter what,” Skura said. “They came in strong after we beat them in the first one. They took the momentum and carried it.”

Skura said because of the heart, talent and drive displayed by his team, he is looking forward to next year’s season already.

“Now that we’ve tasted a little bit of this, they’re not going to give up. They’re not going to let it go,” he said.

When it is the final game of the season and each team has only one win, that next victory can be as important as winning a title.
That was the scenario on Saturday afternoon on a muddy Price Field in Westmont as the Hilltoppers faced the Bishop Carroll Huskies.

Bishop Guilfoyle accomplished something not many believed possible during last week’s win against Cambria Heights. The Marauders significantly hampered the Highlanders’ high-powered run game.
Don’t be surprised if Bishop Guilfoyle’s blueprint for defensive success is copied by other members of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference when going against Cambria Heights.

A few more signs saying “You’ve entered Golden Eagles Territory” align the streets of Somerset these days. There are a couple more people wearing Somerset football T-shirts at the grocery store.
Funny what a couple of decisive victories can do for a program and a community seeking to move past a couple decades of mostly losing seasons.
