Natural Biodiversity has welcomed three new board members:
• Lawyer William Gleason Barbin, a partner with Gleason, McQuillan, Barbin & Markovitz.
• Allison Felix, director of St. Francis University’s Science Outreach Center.
• Daimon Lawrence, director of marketing, CJL Engineering.
The nonprofit organization also reported 38 founding members during its meeting in October. Natural Biodiversity hopes to gain more than 100 additional founding members by the end of the year, Executive Director Kristin Sewak said.
Natural Biodiversity began as a program dedicated to combating and preventing invasive “weed” plants and non-indigenous species into the southwestern Pennsylvania landscape.
The organization is now an open membership nonprofit whose mission is stewardship of the landscape’s biodiversity.
“Seventy percent of Pennsylvania is privately owned, so all of our individual actions make a difference,” Sewak said. “Natural Biodiversity is not a land conservancy, but rather a force for citizen-driven stewardship through the generations. We all want to be proud of what we pass on to our children.”
The individual 2011 membership fee is $25, and various levels are available for students, families and businesses.

UPJ employees earn president’s awards
Two members of the Pitt-Johnstown staff, Janet Hoffman and Carrie Owens, have been awarded President’s Staff Awards for Excellence in Service to the university and the community.
Hoffman, a financial aid assistant, has been a member of the campus staff for 23 years. In addition to her role on campus, she is actively involved in several volunteer activities, including a service project at the Women’s Help Center, “Pitt-Johnstown @ Your Service” Week Humane Society cleanup and a yearly stint as a Salvation Army bell ringer for the Red Kettle Campaign.
She is also a Bethel United Methodist Church volunteer, where she serves as Bible study teacher, and she has been a member of the administrative board and the council of ministries for more than 20 years.
Owens has been a member of the Pitt-Johnstown campus staff for 33 years and is currently the business office student account specialist who handles all student transactions and bank reports. She is actively involved with students and their parents by helping them with their accounts and tuition payments, and she serves as the “go-to person” when questions arise. She also assists various Pitt-Johnstown offices with their cash deposits, which includes giving staff members training on these reports.
