Fabrics retailer growing

JOHNSTOWN — A retail chain is crafting plans to expand its Richland Township store next year.

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores officials say the renovation will make room for a larger selection of crafts, sewing, seasonal and home decor at the University Park Plaza location.

“Whenever we open or remodel a Jo-Ann store, the goal is to provide our customer with the best possible merchandise offering and in-store experience,” Jo-Ann spokesman Joe Adams said, noting the Scalp Avenue store will offer more items in a “much more convenient layout.”

A room will also be added for specialized classes and parties, he added.

Signs at the plaza are already announcing the plans. The store is tentatively planned for an April opening.

Adams said additional details on store changes and grand opening plans will be available early next year.

Richland Township’s zoning officer, Dave Mills, said project developers have approached the township for a permit to gut a portion of the former Penn National/Pony Lounge location to make room for the expansion.

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores bills itself as the nation’s largest fabric and craft retailer with more than 770 locations in 49 states, according to its joann.com website.

The chain has operated a Johnstown-area store for decades, originally in the Richland Mall. The store moved to an 8,000-square-foot location at the University Park Plaza in 1990 and has remained there since.
