JOHNSTOWN —
Ashbridge Oil Co., which services BP stations throughout Pennsylvania, presented a BP Fueling Communities grant donation of $6,500 to the Frank H. and Violet R. Ashbridge Memorial Scholarship at Pitt-Johnstown.
The BP Fueling Communities program provides grants to local organizations that are nominated by BP’s branded marketers to support the towns in which they do business.
Fueling Communities gives back to local organizations that support health, education, youth, food and housing to spread charity and goodwill.
Frank A. and Nancy E. Ashbridge established the scholarship in 1981 in honor of his father, Frank H. Ashbridge, founder and owner of Ashbridge Oil. Violet R. Ashbridge pursued a career in nursing in the Johnstown area.
The scholarship is available to students with financial need who are graduates from Cambria, Somerset, Blair, Bedford or Westmoreland counties. The scholarship supports between five and 10 students annually.

In April 2010, General Motors Chairman Ed Whitacre announced that GM would pay back $8.1 billion in government loans. It was greeted by cheers from employees and no doubt from U.S. treasury officers as well. Of course, much of the $52 billion loaned to General Motors by the federal government – and the $1.4 billion loaned to General Motors by the Canadian government – has been converted to stock, which you and I as taxpayers own. This may be a good investment, for it appears that General Motors has learned its lesson.
