Hometown heroes: Triple Threat sports shop opens

— Promoting local athletes and artists is one of the main goals of the Triple Threat Sports and Swap Shop.

In a glass case, the owners display collectible cards of area sports figures.

They include current Arizona Cardinals running back LaRod Stephens-Howling; Pro Bowl offensive lineman Carlton Haselrig; former Major League Baseball pitcher Mike Holtz; Cy Young Award winner Pete Vuckovich; and Geroy Simon, the all-time receiving yardage leader in Canadian Football League history.

Triple Threat, located at 200 Lincoln St. in downtown Johnstown, also uses a local photographer to frame pictures. The business also sells arts and crafts created by area vendors.

“It’s a local shop dealing with local people,” said Greg Shroyer, one of four co-owners. “It will help them and help them help us.”

In the future, Triple Threat, which opened on Tuesday, plans to have local athletes hold autograph sessions at the store.

The company additionally wants to become the main outlet for Phoenix Pro Wrestling, a Johnstown-based federation that puts on many charity shows in the region.

The name of the business has a pro wrestling connection of its own. It was taken from the Triple Threat, a heel faction in the old Extreme Championship Wrestling, a Philadelphia-based promotion that rose to national prominence.

“We just thought it was a cool name,” said co-owner Larry Stricker.

Triple Threat is open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
