IUP to host financial crimes seminar

JOHNSTOWN — For those who work to understand or unmask fraud and its impact: Indiana University of Pennsylvania is hosting a speaker you’ll want to “catch.”

Professionals involved with financial institutions, insurance and accounting agencies, law enforcement and cybercrime analysis can sit in on “Financial Crimes: The Seminar,” which will be held at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex on March 6.

The keynote speaker for the event is Frank Abagnale, the author of and basis for the book “Catch Me If You Can,” which was adapted for the screen in 2002, starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio.

From age 16 to 21, Abagnale posed as an airline pilot, an attorney, a college professor and a pediatrician while crisscrossing the country, cashing millions’ worth of fraudulent checks in all 50 states and 26 foreign countries. After his arrest by French authorities, Abagnale was eventually released, under one condition.

For 35 years, he’s worked with not only the FBI, but also hundreds of financial institutions and law enforcement agencies, helping hone fraud detection and prevention strategies around the world.

The all-day seminar, kicking off at 7:30 a.m., will focus on understanding and detecting financial crimes, including counterfeiting, insurance fraud, embezzlement and cybercrime trends. Abagnale’s keynote speech starts at 10 a.m.

Registration is $40, which includes materials, continental breakfast and buffet lunch. Parking at the Kovalchick complex is free.

Attendees must register by Thursday. Go to www.iup.edu/marketplace or call 724-357-2227 for more information.

Business fraud is everywhere. It can range from employees pilfering small items from the office to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars. And crimes may be committed by anyone from the lowest-paid clerk to a longtime officer. All too often, business owners are oblivious to wrongdoings, or they simply refuse to acknowledge the possibilities – until it’s too late.

In April 2010, General Motors Chairman Ed Whitacre announced that GM would pay back $8.1 billion in government loans. It was greeted by cheers from employees and no doubt from U.S. treasury officers as well. Of course, much of the $52 billion loaned to General Motors by the federal government – and the $1.4 billion loaned to General Motors by the Canadian government – has been converted to stock, which you and I as taxpayers own. This may be a good investment, for it appears that General Motors has learned its lesson.
