Somerset newspaper to be printed in Altoona

18 workers will lose jobs in move

SOMERSET — The (Somerset) Daily American newspaper will be printed by the Altoona Mirror beginning March 8.

The Somerset paper announced the change Thursday.

Publisher Andrew Bruns said the newspaper’s press dates to 1978 and would be too expensive to replace.

Nine full-time and nine-part time employees who worked on the press and in the newspaper’s mail room will lose their jobs as a result.

The newspaper will continue to have local reporters, as well as a local sales team, customer service and delivery employees.

Raymond Eckenrode, the Altoona newspaper’s general manager of advertising, said in the story that the additional printing work is “just big enough to keep us very busy in Altoona, but not so big as to cause a dramatic change in routine for our employees and readers.”
