ExCEL – Expanding Chamber Excellence in Leadership – will present a program titled “Generations: The Newest Form of Diversity” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the at the Holiday Inn-Downtown Johnstown, 250 Market St.

Guest speaker will be Aaron V. Nygren, president of Nygren Training Solutions.

Cost is $20 for members of the Greater Johns­town/Cambria County Chamber of Commerce and $25 for nonmembers.

Nov. 29

NAMI Cambria County will present “Civilians in the Crossfire – Mental Health Casualties in a War-Torn Country” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn-Downtown Grand Ballroom in Johnstown.

It will include the reflections of local resident Kathy Griffith on her work as a nurse-midwife among Afghans tramatized by the effects of war and oppression.

The program has been approved for two continuing education hours by Pitt-Johnstown. It is open to the public.

Dec. 3

A Microsoft Excel Basics workshop will be held at the Holiday Inn-Downtown, 250 Market St., Johnstown.

The workshop will include Excel formulas and functions that enable spreadsheet work; worksheet design and organization; use of charts and graphs; editing; solving common printing problems; creating and using simple macros.

Cost is $79.

The following day, Dec. 4, a workshop will be held on Microsoft Excel – Beyond the Basics.

Cost is $99.

Dec. 4

Three seminars on communication skills for women are scheduled in the region.

The first will take place Dec. 4 at the Holiday Inn Express, 3306 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona.

The second will take place Dec. 5 at the Comfort Inn and Suites, 455 Theatre Drive., Richland Township.

The third will take place Dec. 6 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 700 Powerline Drive, Greensburg.

Participants will build skills needed to overcome communications obstacles and get results.

The Women’s Information Network will present “A WINning Holiday” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Sunnehanna Country Club in Westmont.

Dec. 7

A free small business resource and opportunities forum titled “Succeeding with Government and Commercial Buyers” will take place at Pitt-Johnstown’s Conference Center.  

Doors open for registration and networking at 7 a.m. with opening remarks and an address from Sen. Bob Casey at 8:20.

Some of the presentations include learning about small-business support services and doing business with government agencies.

Attendees also may network with business support organizations and companies seeking suppliers.

The forum will conclude at noon.

    In April 2010, General Motors Chairman Ed Whitacre announced that GM would pay back $8.1 billion in government loans. It was greeted by cheers from employees and no doubt from U.S. treasury officers as well. Of course, much of the $52 billion loaned to General Motors by the federal government – and the $1.4 billion loaned to General Motors by the Canadian government – has been converted to stock, which you and I as taxpayers own. This may be a good investment, for it appears that General Motors has learned its lesson.
