Chiefs lending a hand to former Johnstown star

JOHNSTOWN — The Johnstown Chiefs will be holding fundraisers at two of their remaining home games to benefit one of the city’s greatest players.

Galen Head, who scored 601 points in eight seasons with the Johnstown Jets, recently was admitted to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. In an effort to assist with costs associated with his stay in the hospital, the Chiefs will be raffling off a pair of special jerseys.

A statement released by the Chiefs did not say what health problems are affecting the 62-year-old Head.

On Sunday, fans can purchase tickets to win a Head replica Jets jersey, while on April 3 an authentic, autographed Sidney Crosby jersey will be up for grabs. Raffle tickets can be purchased individually for five dollars or in groups of six for $20. All proceeds from the jersey raffles will benefit Head, and fans wishing to make cash donations will be able to at all remaining home games.

The final seconds ticked down in the Johnstown Chiefs’ ECHL existence on Saturday night, and even though the hometown team trailed by four goals, a standing-room-only crowd began chanting, “Let’s go Chiefs.”
That chant would be nothing out of the ordinary on most nights. But this game was the last game.
Twenty-two ECHL seasons and thousands of memories came to a conclusion when the Chiefs dropped a 5-3 contest to Elmira at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
