College basketball roundup: UPJ women race to 28-0 lead in win

The Pitt-Johnstown women built a 28-0 lead and held Alderson-Broaddus to just five first-half points in a 77-39 WVIAC victory Thursday evening in the Sports Center.

Jasmine Harper scored 15 points and Nicole Carman added 11 on a night that saw all 12 Lady Cats get into the scoring column and Pitt-Johnstown extend its winning streak to five games.

The Lady Cats improved to 12-7 overall, 10-6 in the conference.

Pitt-Johnstown held Alderson-Broaddus scoreless for the first 12 minutes and opened a 28-0 lead. Rachel Johnson put the Lady Cats up by 10 before six straight points from Harper doubled it to 20-0 at 11:47.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Kelsey Sleighter pushed it to 26-0 before another bucket in the paint by Harper closed the run at 28-0 with 9:09 left in the half.

The Battlers, who shot just 7.1 percent in the first half, got on the scoreboard with a Cayla Rhodes free throw at 7:58. Nautica Davis followed with jumper to make it 28-3, but Pitt-Johnstown outscored Alderson-Broaddus 11-2 the rest of the way to build a 34-point halftime advantage.

Harper had 15 points and Carman added 11 to lead UPJ. Kaitlynn Fratz and Sleighter each chipped in nine points while Inaya Stephenson, Leah Hansen and Rizzo had six points each. Stephenson grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, and Grace Hyland pulled down six.

Men

St. Francis 62

NEW YORK – Booker Hucks matched his career high with 20 points off the bench as LIU Brooklyn won its sixth straight game 82-62 over St. Francis (Pa.) Thursday night for a Northeast Conference victory.

Hucks hit a career-high five 3-pointers. The senior is 9-of-13 shooting from deep over his past two games and has made 45.5 percent (15 of 33) from deep in 10.8 minutes per game this season for the Blackbirds (11-10, 6-3).

Earl Brown had 22 points for the Red Flash (1-19, 1-8), including two when he tipped an LIU Brooklyn inbound pass into the basket. St. Francis has lost 15 straight on the road.

Alderson-Broaddus 68

Pitt-Johnstown 60

Nick Novak led all scorers with 26 points, but Alderson-Broaddus used a 17-8 second-half run to erase an eight-point deficit and end Pitt-Johnstown’s four-game winning streak with a 68-60 WVIAC victory Thursday night in the Sports Center.

UPJ’s Nick Novak led all scorers with 26 points as the Mountain Cats slipped to 12-8 overall, 8-8 in the conference.

The Mountain Cats fell behind by one early, then used to 15-4 run to open up a 10-point lead.
