Fifth-ranked Mountain Cats win easily

JOHNSTOWN — Things just keep getting better for the Pitt-Johnstown wrestling team.

The Mountain Cats ran their impressive dual-meet win streak to 13 with Saturday’s thorough 44-3 victory over Anderson (S.C.) at the Sports center.

Pitt-Johnstown, the No. 5 team in the Division II rankings, improved to 14-2 with the victory.

UPJ recorded four victories by pin. Dave Cawley at 141 got the Mountain Cats’ first pin. His pin was followed with pins by Gary Lantz (174), Travis McKillop (184) and Westmont-Hilltop graduate Josh Duplin at 285. Duplin is a freshman.

Penn Cambria graduate Evan Link scored a major decision and Keith Ryan notched a major decision over Jamal Lackey at 165 in the most anticipated match of the meet.

Joel Paolo (157) and Nikos Garafola (197), who is wrestling up in weight class, won by decision. Jack Bachman won by forfeit at 149.

Pitt-Johnstown’s only loss came at 133 when Zak Hale upset Forest Hills graduate Dave Fogle, 7-2.

With the loss, Anderson fell to 4-16 on the season.

The Mountain Cats close the dual meet season at home against Shippensburg University for Senior Night on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Then, Pitt-Johnstown travels to the Super Region I Tournament at Kutztown University on Feb. 22-23 and to the 2013 NCAA Division II National Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., on March 8-9.
