Lucas leads Penn State to victory against Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The No. 8 Penn State Lady Lions (21-3, 11-1 Big Ten) landed four players in double figures, led by Maggie Lucas’ 21 points, en route to an

81-69 win at Iowa (16-10, 5-7) on Thursday night.

The win improves the Lady Lions’ record to 11-1 in conference play, their best start since the 2002-03 team also started 11-1.

Lucas connected on a trio of 3-pointers as she posted her 11th 20-point performance of the season and 42nd of her career. She moved into eighth place on Penn State’s career scoring list, passing teammate Alex Bentley and Lisa Shepherd with 1,669 points. She also tallied four rebounds and a steal. Ariel Edwards provided a spark off of the bench, going 5 for 7 from the field en route to 15 points in 18 minutes. She also had two rebounds, a steal and a block.

The Lady Lions have won 15 of their last 16 games. Iowa (16-10, 5-7) has lost five straight.

This was the Hawkeyes’ first loss to a ranked opponent in seven games. The six wins are the most for anyone nationally.

Morgan Johnson led Iowa with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Hawkeyes hit only one field goal during a nearly eight-minute stretch in the second half as their 38-37 lead turned into a 12-point deficit.

Defendants in Penn State scandal lose another appeal
Two former Penn State administrators lost a second state appeals court ruling in less than two weeks Tuesday, when Superior Court threw out their request to review whether a grand jury judge had authority to dismiss charges against them.
The appeals court agreed with prosecutors, who argued the Supreme Court alone can consider matters regarding a grand jury investigation. The high court earlier this month, in a parallel matter, also ruled against retired vice president Gary Schultz and former athletic director Tim Curley.
