WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. —
Top-ranked West Liberty survived a scare from Pitt-Johnstown, bursting away from a 75-74 deficit with eight minutes to play, the first time this season the Hilltoppers have trailed during a second half.
Cedric Harris had 32 points and C.J. Hester 18 to lead four double-figure efforts as the Hilltoppers improved to 12-0 (6-0 WVIAC) with a 101-92 victory.
UPJ is 6-4 (3-4 WVIAC).
Nick Novak had 26 points and five assists while Jordan Miller scored 23 points for the Mountain Cats.
Vescovi had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Bill Luther scored 14 points.
West Liberty shot 54 percent (37 of 70) from the field and 18 of 24 at the foul line while UPJ sank 53 percent (33 of 61) of its field-goal attempts and 17 of 20 at the stripe.
The Mountain Cats led 38-28 in rebounding.
Mount Aloysius 85, Hilbert 82: At Cresson, Mount Aloysius remained atop the AMCC standings with a win over Hilbert.
Mount Aloysius and Hilbert were tied for first before Saturday’s back-and-forth battle. The Mounties held a 42-39 lead at the half, but Hilbert came back to lead by eight with 5:48 to play.
A Kyle Baughman steal and layup sparked a 10-0 Mount Aloysius run that allowed the hosts to regain the advantage, which they kept.
Demetrius Davis led Mount Aloysius with 21 points while Jeff Stem and Dameon Turner added 18 each. Turner also had eight rebounds.
Anthony Hodge paced Hilbert with a game-high 23 points.
Mount Aloysius will host D'Youville at 3 p.m. today.
College Women
West Liberty 91, Pitt-Johnstown 60
At West Liberty, W.Va., Pitt-Johnstown absorbed a one-sided loss on Saturday at West Liberty, dropping to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the WVIAC.
West Liberty stepped out to a 5-0 lead before the Lady Cats got on the board, then ran the advantage to 21-8 by the 11:06 mark of the first half, and led 40-21 at intermission.
The Hilltoppers’ Hillary Southworth scored 15 consecutive points as West Liberty opened the second half with a 15-5 run. She finished the game with 23 points. Jasmin Kiley scored 18, Meghan Wiseman had 16 and MJenn ohney scored 14 as the hosts improved to 7-3 (5-1 WVIAC).
Inaya Stephenson’s 16 points led UPJ, which got 12 points from Kaitlynn Fratz.
West Liberty led 44-38 in rebounding and sank 37 of 69 shots from the field, including 14 of 27 from 3-point range, and converted three of five free-throw attempts.
The Lady Cats hit the hoop on 23 of 67 shots while sinking 4 of 15 from the 3-point arc and 10 of 21 at the foul line.
UPJ continues its stretch of three straight WVIAC games on Monday at Alderson-Broaddus, the visits West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday.
St. Francis 81, Bryant 76: At Loretto, St. Francis opened its Northeast Conference schedule with a win over Bryant in DeGol Arena.
Alli Williams posted a career-high 30 points for the Red Flash (6-6, 1-0) as St. Francis held off a late charge from the Bulldogs (4-7, 0-1).
Bryant was led by Naan Ankoma-Mensa, who led the Bulldogs with 25 points and a game-high 22 rebounds. Nickia Gibbs tied a season-high with 15 points for St. Francis and freshman teammate Brooklyn Taylor had a career-high 11 off the bench.
The Red Flash return play host to Central Connecticut State on Monday.
Mount Aloysius 71, Hilbert 66: At Cresson, Lindsey Sammarco scored 22 points and Becky Bard had 19 to help lift Mount Aloysius over Hilbert.
Teddi Burkett grabbed 17 rebounds for the Mounties.
Jessica Jamison’s 20 points led the visitors, who got 13 points from Sarah Lorusso, 12 by Natalie Whitman and 10 off Jenah Labuski, who also had 10 rebounds.
Mount Aloysius shot nearly 30 percent from the field (23 of 78) and 20 of 32 from the foul line while Hilbert sank 27 of 68 field-goal attempts (39.7 percent) and made 4 of 6 free throws. Each team had 41 rebounds.
