CRESSON — Lauren Krug has always wanted to run in college.
The Penn Cambria High School senior received that opportunity as she signed an NCAA letter-of-intent to attend St. Francis, where she will participate in cross country and track.
“It was always a dream of mine to get a scholarship for running,” Krug said Thursday. “I just feel honored that I was noticed and I will be able to participate in a sport at the collegiate level.”
Krug has competed in track and cross country at Penn Cambria. In her first year of running cross country when Penn Cambria started the program in 2006, Krug finished fifth in District 6 Class AA and then followed that with an 11th-place finish last fall.
She qualified for the PIAA Cross Country Championships in both seasons.
Krug has run cross country for coach Todd Niebauer and has competed in track for coach Mike Soyka. She competes in the 800, 1600, and the 3200 meters in track, along with the 3200-meter relay at times. She qualified for the PIAA Track and Field Championships in the 1600 last spring after finishing third in District 6-AA competition.
Krug will run for coach Felix Moreno at St. Francis, and she will major in occupational therapy.
A resident of Ashville, she is happy to be attending a college close to home.
“I was happy to get offered the opportunity to run for St. Francis because it is so close and it is easier for members of my family to come and watch me,” she said.
She also was impressed by the cross country and track programs at St. Francis.
“They seem to have some great coaching, and I just really liked their environment,” Krug said. “And I have run their course before, and I like it.”
She is a daughter of Terry and Janice Krug of Ashville.
