CRESSON — Mount Aloysius men’s basketball coach Lance Loya will host the Coaches vs. Cancer basketball coaching clinic on Nov. 1 at the Cresson college.
“I think we have got a great clinic lined up with some really quality speakers,” Loya said in a release. “Sunday, November 1st is the Steeler’s bye week, so there is no excuse for local coaches to not take advantage of this exciting opportunity.”
The clinic will commence at 1 p.m., with Tussey Mountain boys coach Dave Bailey speaking on the topic of team defense. Bailey has amassed more than 600 wins during his 37-year career, which ranks 17th in the state for career wins.
“I always solicit suggestions for our future coaching clinics. We had a number requests for getting a successful high school coach to participate, and I think we have one of the best coming in Coach Bailey,” Loya said. “I know he will be entertaining.”
Bailey will be followed by St. Francis men’s basketball coach Don Friday, who will speak about offensive philosophies and the Red Flash motion offense.
“Coach Friday is very enthusiastic about his craft, and he has a considerable amount to share with his coaching brethren. Coaches who come to the clinic will find him to be insightful and engaging,” Loya said.
Former Red Flash standout Mike Iuzzolino will follow Friday. After leaving St. Francis, Iuzzolino played in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks and continued his pro career overseas.
He is in his second season coaching at St. Vincent College.
“Everybody in our area is familiar with Mike Iuzzolino’s relentless work ethic, and he is going to talk at length about some of the drills he believes are imperative for successful individual player development,” Loya said.
“Mike has gone on to become a quality coach, and his lecture is definitely something not to be missed.”
The clinic will conclude with Loya speaking on drills that instill toughness in players, followed by an open question-and-answer session.
The cost of the coaching clinic is $20 with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer fund.
Additional information and registration forms can be obtained at www.mtaloy.edu/athletics or by calling (814) 886-6314.
Registration is permitted at the door.
“One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the coaching clinic go straight to charity, so I encourage basketball coaches from all levels of play to come. It is going to be a beneficial experience,” Loya said.
