STATE COLLEGE — Jeff Brooks had 14 points and five rebounds to lead Penn State to a 58-42 victory over winless Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday night.
Andrew Jones had his fourth career double-double and first of this season, adding 10 points and 10 rebounds. Talor Battle had seven points for the Nittany Lions (6-3).
“It just happened for me, things started clicking,” Jones said. “I know I can be productive on offense, it’s just a matter of getting that confidence back and taking my time and allowing my teammates to find me.”
The first half was back and forth with the score tied six times and four lead changes.
Penn State took the lead with just over 1 minute left in the half on a fast-break layup from Battle, and the Nittany Lions scored four unanswered points to close the first half.
Penn State took a 27-23 advantage at halftime.
Both teams played sloppily in the first half, as the ball was turned over a total of 11 times, including four steals by UMBC.
Both teams struggled to sink a 3-pointer in the first half, with UMBC going 1-for-9 and Penn State 1-for-11 from outside the arc.
Both Penn State and UMBC finished shooting less than
20 percent from long range.
The Nittany Lions opened the second half with a dunk by Brooks. After the Retrievers missed a shot on the next play, Battle took the ball down the court and hit a 3-pointer to put Penn State up by nine.
Penn State rolled from there, going on a 31-19 run in the second half.
At halftime, Penn State coach Ed DeChellis told his players they looked motionless and like they were playing with no passion. To try to kick start their energy, he threatened them with unwanted drills in practice later this week.
“I said for every point (the Retrievers) score over 50, we’re running sprints Thursday,” DeChellis said. “That kind of got them going a little bit. They don’t like those sprints.”
The Nittany Lions shot only 39.1 percent from the floor
(25-for-64) in the game, but the Retrievers had just a 32.1 mark (18-for-56).
Chris De La Rosa and Brian Neller led UMBC (0-8) with
10 points each. Adrian Satchell added six points and five rebounds.
With UMBC having two of their most productive offensive players on the bench due to injuries (Robbie Jackson and Justin Fry), coach Randy Monroe thought his team, especially his bench players, put up a good effort.
“We ran out of gas a little bit,” Monroe said. “Penn State did a good job of pounding the glass and it kind of took its toll on us a little bit.”
