Pitt rallies by Detroit in 2nd half

PITTSBURGH – Talib Zanna scored 16 points and Tray Woodall added 14 as Pitt rallied past Detroit 74-61 on Saturday night.

Lamar Patterson added 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Panthers (7-1), who overwhelmed the Titans (2-4) in the second half. Ray McCallum led Detroit (2-4) with 24 points, but the Titans shot just 32 percent (9 of 28) in the final 20 minutes to drop their third straight.

Detroit dominated for most of the first half, leading by as much as 13, but could do little when McCallum cooled off. The junior scored just five points after halftime as Pitt extended its defense to try and knock him off rhythm.

Marshall leads Penn State past Penn

STATE COLLEGE – Jermaine Marshall scored 18 points and two other Penn State players scored in double figures in a 58-47 win over Pennsylvania.

Marshall was fouled hard by Jamal Lewis on a breakaway with just under two minutes remaining. Lewis was ejected from the game after receiving a flagrant foul, and Marshall hit both free throws to give Penn State a 54-44 lead.

The Nittany Lions (4-3) didn’t look back from there, outscoring the Quakers 9-3 during the stretch.

Penn (2-6) never led in the second half, but kept Penn State’s lead in single digits for much of the half. A pair of Dau Jok free throws at the 7:26 mark cut the Nittany Lions’ lead to four.

Tony Hicks led the Quakers with 10 points on 4 of 10 shooting. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Penn.

Novak, UPJ topple Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – Nick Novak scored 19 points to lead five double-figure scorers, and the Mountain Cats shot 59 percent from the field in the second half to open up a 15-point advantage en route to a 78-71 WVIAC victory at Davis & Elkins.

Pitt-Johnstown improved to 4-2 overall and evened in record in conference play at 2-2.

Novak led UPJ with 19 points and game-highs of 10 assists and four steals. Andrew Cressler had 16 points, including 4-for-4 from 3-point range, and six rebounds, while Jordan Miller finished with 15 points.

Bill Luther had 12 points, all on 3-pointers, and six rebounds, and Ian Vescovi rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points, five rebounds and four blocks.

St. Francis drops nonconference matchup

WASHINGTON – Stephen Lumpkins scored 22 points as American University pulled away in the final five minutes for a 61-51 victory over St. Francis in a nonconference game.

Tony Wroblicky scored three layups in a span of less than two minutes to help the Patriots (3-4) take a 55-51 lead with 2:11 to play. Daniel Munoz made four free throws in the final 49 seconds to help American stay in front and end a three-game losing streak.

Umar Shannon scored 20 points to lead the Red Flash (0-6), who lost their eighth in a row, dating to last season, and their 10th in a row on the road.

Mike Bersch added 14 points, making 4 of 8 from 3-point range for American, which shot 55 percent (11 of 20) in the second half to 30.8 percent (8 of 26) for St. Francis.

Stephon Mosley had 15 points for the Red Flash.

Mount knocks off defending champs

CRESSON – Mount Aloysius improved to 4-1 on the season, after downing defending conference champions Medaille College 76-52.

Mount Aloysius fell behind early, but was able to regain its composure and take a 49-34 halftime lead.

The Mounties shot 58 percent from the field in the first half, including 5 of 12 from 3-point range.

The second half would see Mount Aloysius extend its lead, while holding the normally sharp shooting Medaille to just a single 3-pointer and 14 percent shooting. The Mounties also forced 22 Medaille turnovers.

Jeff Stem led Mount Aloysius with 23 points. Tanner Thomas added 15 points, while Dameon Turner chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds. Nolan Doyle contributed six steals.

Speigle, Black Bears cruise to victory

TITUSVILLE – Penn Highlands improved to 2-4 with a 75-55 victory Pitt-Titusville.

Four Black Bears scored in double figures with Grant Speigle, a Conemaugh Township product, leading the way, shooting 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, and scoring 28 points.

Josh Corbett had 13 points, while Rashaud Kelley and Jermaine Graves both had 12. Johnstown’s Caleb Calhoun controlled the boards with 10 rebounds.

Women

Red Flash suffer first home loss of season

LORETTO – St. Francis fell for just the second time this season, losing 61-44 against St. Joseph’s.

The Red Flash (4-2, 0-0) put together a strong first half and only trailed by two at the intermission, but the Hawks (4-2, 0-0) opened the second half on a strong run and SFU could not recover. Chatilla Van Grinsven posted a huge game for St. Joseph’s with 18 points and 21 rebounds to lead all players.

The Red Flash got 11 points from Kelley Doogan and 10 points and nine rebounds from Alli Williams, but it was not enough to dodge the first SFU home loss of the season. The Flash were limited to just 20.7 percent shooting (6-for-29) in the second half and just 25.4 percent (15-for-59) for the game.

Carman’s OT bucket lifts Lady Cats

ELKINS, W.Va., – Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) College battled back from a 13-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but Nicole Carman’s basket with seven seconds to play in the extra period led the Lady Cats to a 73-72 WVIAC victory over the Senators.

Pitt-Johnstown evened its overall record at 3-3 and improved to 1-3 in the WVIAC.

Carman led four Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 18 points and five rebounds. Kaitlynn Fratz finished with 17 points, six rebounds, and a game-high eight assists, and Kayla DeCriscio had 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Kelsey Sleighter rounded out the Lady Cats who scored in double figures with 11 points.
