No. 6 Findlay upends UPJ

FINDLAY, Ohio — Gary Lantz’s pin at 174 pounds got the 11th-ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers to within one point of tying the match, but sixth-ranked University of Findlay won the final three bouts to pull away and deal Pitt-Johnstown a 22-12 road loss on Saturday.

The Mountain Cats are now 1-1.

“We’re just a little bit away from beating the top-10 teams,” said UPJ coach Pat Pecora.

“It was a good match. They’re ranked fourth in one poll and sixth in another. They’re a top-notch team and we went toe to toe with them.”

Findlay got a 6-0 win by No. 2 Ben Sergeant over Evan Link at 125 pounds to start the match, before Glenn Winslow evened the score at three with a 10-4 win over Shane Troyer at 133.

After a close loss at 141, the Mountain Cats answered to tie it again with a 4-3 win by All-American Jack Bachman at 149.

However, the Roughnecks took the lead with a decision victory at 157 and never gave it up.

Top-ranked Mason True scored a 16-8 major decision over Keith Ryan at 165 to increase it to 13-6, before Lantz pinned Alec Bissel at :35 to get UPJ to within one at 13-12.

However, No. 1 ranked Adam Walters won a 5-2 decision over Travis McKillop in the 184-pound bout, and Ashton Brown defeated Sean O’Connell 6-2 to increase it to 19-12 and seal the win.

Findlay, which improved to 2-0, closed out the match and set the final at 22-12 with seventh-ranked Andrew Tumlin’s 5-3 decision over Josh Duplin at 285.

The Mountain Cats will make their 2012-13 home debut on Tuesday against No. 20 East Stroudsburg University at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center, before celebrating Pecora’s 500th career win on Saturday prior to taking on Ohio Valley (W.Va.) University at 7 p.m.
