LOYSBURG —
Matt Dull finished well ahead of the pack in both of his hurdles races and Chestnut Ridge teammate Michael Young won two of the three jumping events on Wednesday at the District 5-AA Track and Field Championship Meet held at Northern Bedford County High School.
Dull and Young helped lead the Lions squad to a second straight team title. Ridge finished with 100 points, 13 ahead of Northern Bedford, which was second. Bedford (78 points), Somerset (60) and Southern Fulton (53) rounded out the top five.
A senior, Dull won the 110 hurdles in 15.15 seconds then turned around and claimed the 300 hurdles title in 39.05, both state qualifying times. He is making his second straight trip to the PIAA Championships, set for May 25-26 at Shippensburg University.
“I felt pretty good,” Dull said.
“I was a little stronger in the 300s today. I have to keep increasing my speed as I head to states. I just have to go there and do my best. I feel like I am on the right track and with even more competition that I can get a better time.”
Young is once again headed to the state track meet. The Lions senior, who was seventh in the state last year, jumped 45 feet, 5¾ inches on Wednesday in the triple jump, a state qualifying standard. He came back and also won the long jump in 20-11½.
“It was a good feeling to win both events,” Young said. “Obviously when you’re seeded first then you want to do your best and have everything work out. I came out and did my best and obviously I couldn’t be happier. Triple jump has always been my favorite and long jump just snuck up in there this year.”
Young has been battling a heel injury that he sustained at the West Central Invitational.
“I haven’t done anything since then and tried to stay off of them,” Young said. “In the triple jump, they felt all right, in the high jump I was a little more tired and by the time I got to the long jump, I hurt pretty bad, but you can’t control it so you have to work through it.”
The other Lions winner was the 400 relay foursome of J.P. Hillegass, Trent Lohr, Chase May and Steven Frankenberry, which won in 44.72.
Windber’s 3200 relay foursome of Kyle Gipe, Kevin Charney, Devon Tomlinson and Austin Leonardis established a meet record in the event. The quartet finished in 8:14.63, bettering the 1982 time of 8:19.55 run by Bedford. It was the only record of the day.
Sophomore Dan Meyer of Somerset was a double winner, winning the 100 in 11.30 and the 200 in 22.81 to make his first trip to states.
“I was a little stronger in the 100 today,” Meyer said. “I felt good the whole way through it.
“In the 200, we were all together coming through the turn and then I was able to start pulling away. It was really close at the end.”
Golden Eagles teammate J.R. Hemminger was also the top pole vaulter, clearing 12-6.
Shade’s Jordan Wilt, a junior, also had a pair of wins on Wednesday. Wilt won the 1600 in 4:42.54 and the 800 in 1:59.74.
“I’m pretty happy with how I ran today,” Wilt said. “The mile wasn’t quite as fast as I want to be but I still won. We work a lot on finishes at practice.
Wilt, who is making his first trip to the state meet, decided to drop the 1600 and focus on the 800. “I have no clue what to expect down there,” Wilt said. “It’s pretty crazy.”
The other area winner was Bedford’s 1600 relay foursome of Josh Wakefield, Dakota Hess, Steven Stroup and Dylan Evans, which ran a time of 3:30.65.

Conemaugh Township eliminated
Conemaugh Township matched Sewickley Academy almost shot for shot on Tuesday evening, but was unable to take advantage of two early Panthers goals that were nullified, and fell 1-0 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
After an initially long battle for possession at midfield, Sewickley gained the offensive advantage and looked as though it was going to quickly take the lead as forward Mackenzie Coles appeared to score off of a long kick by Sophia Werner that was mishandled by Township goal keeper Jenna Telenko. -
