Richland, West End Giant Eagle supermarkets sold

— Two local Giant Eagle supermarkets soon will be sold.

The stores, located on Broad Street in Johnstown’s West End and University Park Plaza in Richland Township, will become officially owned by Giant Eagle Inc. on Dec. 30. The company will purchase them from the current independent owners, Basil, Edward and Carmen Trovato, who all recently decided to retire.

“I greatly enjoyed the many years I spent serving our Johnstown area customers and thank them for their patronage,” said Basil Trovato. “Giant Eagle has agreed to operate the supermarkets as corporately-owned locations, and customers can expect the same high-quality fresh foods, convenience-oriented service departments and excellent everyday value they have come to expect from Giant Eagle.”

When asked if plans exist to expand or close either location, Dick Roberts, a spokesperson for Giant Eagle, said, “We will operate the stores as corporately owned locations. There is nothing further to confirm at this time.”

The Trovato family has owned the Broad Street location since 1986. They purchased the plaza store in 1995.

Financial terms of the sales were not disclosed.

The two markets employ about 215 people combined. Those individuals will be the first considered to fill positions by the new corporately-owned markets.

The Giant Eagle corporation already operates one other supermarket in Cambria County at 344 Goucher St. in Upper Yoder Township.
