Shade is the lone ranked area team in the boys’ Harrisburg Patriot-News poll.
The Panthers, who are No. 9, are joined in honorable mention by Bishop Carroll and Shanksville-Stonycreek in Class A. Bishop McCort is an honorable mention selection in Class AA.
Shade (11-0) will clash with WestPAC South rival Shanksville-Stonycreek (9-1) on Tuesday in Cairnbrook, one of numerous interesting matchups this week.
Ryan Fyock and Wade Walker have provided much of the offensive firepower for the Panthers, averaging 27.9 and 17.2 points a game, respectively. Brock Medva and Nash Walker chip in 10.1 and 7.9 points a game for Shade.
Wade Walker is also the leading rebounder, averaging 12.9 a game.
Carter Slade tops the Vikings with 17.0 points a game with Jordan Wilt adding 11.9 and Ryan Platt 9.7 points a game, respectively.
Slade and Conner Fleegle are the top rebounders with 7.4 and 5.0 boards a game.
In the WestPAC North, Blacklick Valley is at Conemaugh Township as the top two teams square off on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Berlin Brothersvalley girls travel to Meyersdale in a WestPAC South battle of the top two teams.
The Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference also has some key games for the boys on Friday.
The top two teams in Section 2 will play, as Greater Johnstown is at Bishop McCort, while the top two in Section 1, Bishop Carroll and Penn Cambria, will tangle in Cresson.
And, in non-conference action for the traditionalists, the Greater Johnstown boys (7-3) will test their mettle tonight in Altoona against the Mountain Lions (7-4).
Quite a stir: My understanding of the rule regarding the striped shirt for official basketball scorekeepers has set off a rivulet of controversy.
Rule 2-11-12 states: The Official scorer is required to wear a black-and-white vertically striped garment.
The comment on the rule says “The rules committee believes more emphasis is needed to give the official scorekeeper visibility as a part of the officiating team. This rule clearly identifies the official scorekeeper as a neutral party and a table official whose role is imperative to good game administration and fair play. It adds to the ease of players substitution and for officials to report fouls.”
According to the rules, there is no immediate penalty for not wearing the stripes, but officials must report it to the school and to the state.
And, just for the record, my initial query had nothing to do with bashing officials. It’s interesting that it was interpreted in that manner.
The only thing that I have said about basketball officials is that the good ones blend right into the game and allow the players to be the story.
Officials are human after all, just like sports writers.
