JOHNSTOWN —
Greater Johnstown is the lone unbeaten boys’ basketball squad in the area as of Sunday.
The Trojans, 8-0 overall, are also the leaders in Section 2 of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference with a 4-0 mark, just ahead of Westmont and Bishop McCort, both 2-1, and Richland 2-2. In Section 1, Bishop Carroll is 3-0 followed by Forest Hills (3-1) and Cambria Heights (2-2).
In the WestPAC, the boys of Conemaugh Township are 4-0 while North Star is also unbeaten at 2-0 in the North Section. Conemaugh Valley is 2-2 and Windber is 1-1. In the South Section, Shade is 3-0 with Berlin just behind at 3-1 followed by Salisbury-Elk Lick and Shanksville-Stonycreek, both 2-1.
Homer-Center (5-0) remains undefeated in the Heritage Conference with Purchase Line and United is just behind at 4-1, followed by Northern Cambria (4-2) and Marion Center (3-2).
In the Sideling Hill League, Tussey Mountain is 4-0 followed by Southern Fulton (4-1), Chestnut Ridge (4-2) and Forbes Road (3-2).
The Berlin Brothersvalley girls are also unbeaten with a 6-0 record overall and sit atop the South Section rankings with a 4-0 record followed by Meyersdale (3-1), Shanksville (2-1) and Rockwood (2-2). In the North Section, Windber holds the top spot at 3-0 followed by Blacklick Valley and Conemaugh Township, both 3-1, and Conemaugh Valley (2-2).
Bishop Guilfoyle (4-0), Forest Hills (3-1) and Bishop Carroll (3-2) are the leading three teams in Section 1 of the Laurel Highlands with Westmont (5-0), Richland (3-1), Johns-town (3-2) and Somerset (2-2) the top squads in Section 2.
Defending District 6 Class AA champion Marion Center (5-0) leads the Heritage Conference standings followed by Homer-Center (4-1), Ligonier Valley (3-1) and Penns Manor (3-2).
Tussey Mountain (4-0), Southern Fulton (4-1), Everett (4-1), Chestnut Ridge (4-2) and Northern Bedford (4-2) are the top teams in the Sideling Hill.

On the ice: Westmont Hilltop, one of just two area squads still playing in the PIHL hockey league, is the third-ranked squad overall in Varsity Class A and is second in Section 4 with a 10-2 mark.
The Hilltoppers’ top competition this year is from Mars – still unbeaten at 12-0 – while Kittanning – the top team in Section 4 – has an 11-1 record.
Westmont has 68 goals this season, led by the league’s top scorer in Corey Schafer. The junior center has produced 41 points, including 22 goals and 19 assists in 10 games. Junior left wing Noah McQuillan has added 25 points for the Hilltoppers with 13 goals and 12 assists in 10 games.
Westmont goalie Adam Ayre is 8-2 with a .799 save percentage. He has faced 179 shots and stopped 143. Freshman Sebastian Ragno is 2-0 with a .929 save percentage and has faced 42 shots, stopping 39.
Ligonier Valley is the other area hockey squad in the league and the Rams are 4-6-1 in Section 4 of the Varsity Open Class.

With conference track and field championships decided, district championships in 5 and
6 are set for this week.
On Tuesday, the District 6-AA meet is scheduled for Altoona’s Mansion Park while the District 5 Class AA meet will be held on Wednesday at Northern Bedford County High School. -

The final 1600 relay races had run, trophies had been awarded and the stands were nearly empty except for a few remaining reporters Friday night at Altoona’s Mansion Park.
The 63rd annual West-Central Coaches Track and Field Invitational was complete for the most part except for one last event. -
CORY ISENBERG| Area competitors do well at Shippensburg
The 86th annual Jack Roddick Shippensburg University High School Track and Field Invitational was held on Saturday and several area participants had quality performances at the event.
In Class AA, Forest Hills senior Sam Deitle won the high jump competition with a leap of 5 feet while Bedford senior Carrie Baker was third in the pole vault (10-6) and sixth in the 800.
Bisons’ teammate Kaitlyn Lippencott was fifth in the triple jump and Bedford’s 400 relay and 1600 relay were both eighth. -

Six teams from the area advanced to the Round of 16, the sweet 16 if you will, in the PIAA basketball playoffs.
The first round featured some dramatic moments for many teams over the weekend, but especially for the Shade boys and the Conemaugh Valley girls. -

Johnstown native Justin Lasky removed a major item from his personal bucket list this past Saturday.
The Bishop McCort graduate was part of the winning team in the DRIVE4COPD 300-lap NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Daytona International Speedway. -
