Cory Isenberg: Time is running out for track

JOHNSTOWN — The conference track and field meets are in the books and athletes are now preparing for this week’s district meets.

The District 6 Class AA meet is set for Tuesday at Altoona’s Mansion Park while the District 5 Class AA meet will be run on Wednesday at Panther Community Stadium on the campus of Northern Bedford High School.

The Class AAA meet for District 6 is scheduled for Thursday at Mansion Park.

Ready to run: In this week’s District 5 meet, Windber senior Tim Roddy has the top seed in two individual events – the 3200 (10:03.21) and the 1600 (4:35.04). He and Ramblers teammates Kyle Gipe, Mike Mash and Sam Weaver are also top-seeded in the 3200 relay (8:33.44).

Roddy has continued to bring his times down as the season has progressed and keeps striving to improve.

“Every race I run, I get faster and faster,” said Roddy earlier this season. “This is the most fit I’ve been in my entire life. I just try to go out there and do my best. I’m running this year for my dad (Tim Roddy Sr.), who passed away last year. I want to go out there and try to be undefeated, which is something he wished for me to do and try to win districts. Every race I try to go out there and get a new (personal record) and run as fast as I can.”

Other top-seeded boys from the area as of May 5 include: Chestnut Ridge’s T.J. Young in the pole vault (13 feet, 101/2 inches) and the high jump (6-2) and teammate Matt Dull in the 300 hurdles (41.24) and Berlin’s Ian Sayler in the long jump (21-2) and Alex Will in the 110 hurdles (15.54).

Bedford has the top times in the 1600 relay and Chestnut Ridge, the top 400 relay.

In the girls seedings, Conemaugh Township senior Kelly Vann has the height to beat in the pole vault (10-8) while Leanna Showalter of Chestnut Ridge and Shade’s Chloe Mapes are tied for the top seed in the high jump (5-3).

Bedford’s Crystal Dibert holds the top distance throws in both the shot (39-31/2) and the discus (112-11) while Bisons teammate Carrie Baker is tops in the triple jump (32-113/4).

Berlin’s Ashley Stoltzfus has the top seed in the 100 hurdles (16.34) and is tied with Northern Bedford’s Kesi Hite for the best time in the 300 hurdles (49.84).

The 1600 and 3200 relays of Bedford are the top seeds. The Chestnut Ridge foursome holds the top seed in the 400 relay.
