Inaugural music fest a success; plans under way for 2010

The Johnstown Area Heritage Association would like to thank the Johnstown community for being so supportive of the inaugural AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival, which took place Aug. 21-23. We are grateful to our corporate sponsors, individual sponsors, in-kind donors, volunteers and everyone who came out and donated, supporting the festival in a year of change.

The overwhelming majority of people entering the gate did choose to donate, demonstrating that they value the event.

Thanks to the support of individual donors and our corporate sponsors, especially title sponsor AmeriServ Financial, we are able to report that the festival is now on its way to financial sustainability.

National acts such as Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Donna the Buffalo and Ruthie Foster played to large, enthusiastic crowds. The Derek Trucks Band, whose performance was made possible by Von’s United Beverage, played to thousands of people to close the event on Sunday night, and the crowd’s excitement was palpable.

In addition, we were proud to present some of Johns-town’s finest musical talent, and these performances were also extremely well-received.

Volunteers play a crucial role in all JAHA museums and special events, especially the music festival.

As always, we received a great deal of positive feedback from performers and festival visitors about our volunteers.

We are grateful to everyone who donated their time to the event, helping to make it a great success.

Labor Day weekend in Johnstown was highly successful, too. The Cambria City Ethnic Festival, Log House Arts Festival and Forest Hills Festival enjoyed large crowds and beautiful weather.

Moving the dates of our festival allowed people to spend more time at all four events, providing even more things to do at the end of the summer for locals, and more opportunities for nonresidents to visit Johnstown. We are delighted by the continued success and growth of the Labor Day weekend festivals and congratulate their organizers.

JAHA is excited about moving forward with development of Festival Park. Our goal is to complete a meaningful phase of development in time for the 2010 event.

As we’ve seen, special events make Johnstown a better place to live, work and visit, and the more special events that are held, the better.

We believe that the Festival Park facility will provide a terrific home for existing special events such as the AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival and also serve as a catalyst for new ones. As such, it can play a vital role in downtown redevelopment and economic revitalization of the city.

Again, JAHA sincerely thanks everyone who supported the 2009 AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival, and we are already making plans for 2010.

Poll

How do you feel about PennDOT's plan to spend $3 million to address safety concerns on Goucher Street in the West Hills?

Considering the traffic problems that exist, the plans make sense.
It would be a waste of tax dollars that could be spent more wisely elsewhere.
I like the concept but I believe it could be scaled back.
I don't have an opinion one way or another.
