Just wondering

— Gov. Tom Corbett next spring will lead a delegation of Pennsylvania business, tourism and university leaders on a business-development mission to Brazil and Chile. The visit will focus on creating economic opportunities and job growth.

It’s not a new idea. Other Pennsylvania governors have initiated similar ventures. We like the idea of going worldwide with the commonwealth’s business dealings.

“Brazil and Chile are two of the world’s fastest-growing economies and we have seen a growing interest in the market from Pennsylvania companies,” Corbett said last week.

“Strengthening our trade relationship with these countries will lead to new business growth and jobs for Pennsylvanians.”

Amen.

Here’s the best part: The trip will be paid for through private funding.

And we hope Cambria County President Commissioner Douglas Lengenfelder is listening.

Last month, Lengenfelder surprisingly proposed a foreign trade zone around the John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport. Initially, he said, his sights are on a bottling and distribution center for Argentina’s winemakers.

We see it as a win-win for our area, and certainly as something that could lead to financial opportunities for the airport.

Lengenfelder said he would lead a delegation this month to meet with vineyard owners and reach out to other industries interested in expanding in the U.S. market.

At a press conference to announce his plan, the rookie commissioner said his travel would be at his own expense.

Here’s our suggestion. Put the trip off until spring and hook up with the governor’s entourage.

Argentina is just a click or two south of Brazil and borders with Chile.
