Zip, zilch, nada | Point promoter has fallen flat on promise

The city of Johnstown is seeking a new promoter for Point Stadium, saying they have had no communication with Spin Wilde Productions since the fall.

“Council is concerned about (Spin Wilde) not communicating with us,” Acting City Manager Bruce Haselrig said last week. “We haven’t heard anything official from them since early fall.”

If the city hasn’t heard from the promoter in months, you have to figure prospective entertainment acts have not been hearing from that promoter, either.

That’s bad news.

We’re moving out of the time period for scheduling events for the summer. That would include concerts and other attractions.

Spin Wilde gets credit for exactly one show at the Point – Pittsburgh rocker Donnie Iris in a hastily produced show during Thunder in the Valley.

“The Spin Wilde agreement required the scheduling of four events per calendar year,” Councilman Jack Williams said.

Perhaps the answer lies just down the street in Johnstown.

While the city is getting little from its deal with Spin Wilde, Cambria County is pleased with the progress made at the War Memorial Arena by its management company, SMG Global.

Indeed, city leaders say they are hoping for an expanded relationship with an outside agency – more manager than promoter. And manage sports and entertainment venues is what SMG does well.

Even if SMG is not the best choice for the Point, breaking off the relationship with Spin Wilde seems like an obvious decision.
