Do you see yourself as a community-minded and -spirited individual? Someone who has spare hours and wants to help an organization that makes a difference in your neighbors’ lives?
Lift Johnstown would love to sign you up.
The second Lift Johns-town Project Party will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Pasquerilla Conference Center in the downtown. The gathering’s purpose is to recruit volunteers to help more than 65 area nonprofits that aren’t flush with funding and believe they can do much more with the help of dedicated volunteers.
“We want to connect people with skills and time with organizations who need them,” Brad Clemenson, Lift coordinator, told our Ruth Rice. “Sometimes there are work days when a project needs done, and other times a volunteer might be needed for a couple of hours a week or a month.”
In Lift’s first effort, in 2012, some 44 eager organizations were on hand and 376 people volunteered.
That’s not surprising. If you’ve lived in our region for even a few years, you’re aware of its giving and caring ways. Volunteering is in our blood.
Lift’s website said the project is “open to students seeking service hours, retired citizens with time to share, church groups reaching out, parents teaching children to give back. Open to anyone who wants to make a difference.”
Volunteers of all ages and with a wide variety of interests and skills are being sought.
Work ranges from clerical or technical tasks to physical labor and working with people.
Last year, Clemenson said, some organizations signed up as many as 30 to 40 volunteers each. Some of the bigger recruiters were Habitat for Humanity, Johnstown Area Heritage Association, the Inclined Plane, Sandyvale Memorial Gardens, Bottleworks Ethnic Arts Center and Goodwill Industries of the Conemaugh Valley Inc.
We urge anyone with an interest in learning more to stop at the project party and hear about the opportunities available.
Offerings also include door prizes, give-aways, music and refreshments.
We expect most of our readers by now have heard of Lift Johnstown and the wonderful work it does in support of our community. It is a collaborating effort of more than two dozen organizations.
