Giant Eagle will remain in Upper Yoder

— Shoppers may miss the personal approach the Hathaway family brought to the Giant Eagle grocery store on Goucher Street in Johnstown.

But those shoppers should be glad that the Giant Eagle company purchased the business and plans to keep it open.

Recently, the corporation took control of the store from the Hathaways, who had run the grocery location for six years.

“Overall, our Goucher Street customers will still find the vast majority of products and services that they have come to expect from their local Giant Eagle,” company spokesman Victor Kimmel told reporter Mike Faher.

“We will deliver a mix of nationally, regionally and locally sourced products and services,” Kimmel added.

The company will continue moving toward the establishment of a GetGo gasoline station at the Goucher Street store, a process that has been moving forward since the plan received approval from the Upper Yoder Township zoning board in March.

The concept still requires the approval of the township supervisors.

Meanwhile, grocery customers will see some minor changes at the store, Kimmell said. But they should be able to find most of the products they have purchased there in the past.

People can adjust to small changes.

At least they still have their Giant Eagle store.

That’s not always how corporate purchases turn out.
