Uniting for a cause

Throngs expected at March for Life

— On Friday, about 10 busloads of individuals will depart the Cambria-Somerset region to participate in the annual March for Life at our nation’s capital.

They will join thousands of others focused on reversing the Jan. 22, 1973, Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which granted women legal status to end a pregnancy.

Also on hand will be those hailing the landmark ruling, using the occasion to further espouse women’s rights.

Although 40 years has passed, the D.C. gathering, not surprisingly, continues to draw strong support from our region. Issues such as abortion and gun control are huge here, obviously.

Joining adults on the buses will be many students, including those from Bishop McCort and Bishop Carroll Catholic high schools. They will be accompanied by the Most Rev. Mark L. Bartchak, bishop of the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese.

“I’m not going to kid myself into thinking there will be a complete end to (Roe v. Wade), but education is the answer in changing people’s minds,” said Pat Mulcahy of Windber, a local organizer.

We pray that those traveling have a safe trip, and we hope among the messages realized on Friday is how fortunate we all are to live in a country that allows large throngs of people to come together and peacefully demonstrate for causes for which we are passionate.
