Readers' Forum 10-16 | Senior center questioned, responds

— I am a member of the Johnstown Senior Activities Center and I love it. Recently, I heard that the center is removing the dances and other things from the activities.

Am I missing something? I thought the center was county-run. How is it that one person can make such decisions? What are the elderly to do?

Many go there to relax and meet others, as well as to enjoy the activities.

I also witnessed an act of rudeness when a center official yelled at a member for her singing when she was not handicapped.

The woman can now walk without help, so she no longer is considered as handicapped.

It is time for changes for the better at the senior center in Johnstown.

Editor’s note: We asked the senior center for response, which follows:

Manager: Dances, other activities continuing

Dear members, future members and readers of The Tribune-Democrat:

I invite you to come and enjoy our hospitality firsthand. We offer an array of activities Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Special events such as dances and other group activities are offered in the evenings.

The cafe is open for all ages on the second floor on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To qualify to become a member, all you have to do is be 60 years of age or older and a resident of Cambria County.

All members are treated equally and with dignity.

Dances are not being discontinued and activities are not changing.

I encourage the writer of this letter to please contact me or stop by so we can find a resolution to her dissatisfaction.

Time our nation had a three-party system

In the U.S. Constitution, it says that we have freedom of choice.

Well I don’t believe that’s true. If it were true, then why must it take an act of Congress to pass a bill to give us a free choice to have an independent person run for president?

This is up to the Republicans and the Democrats to make this happen. And we all know it never will.

Currently, I am not very happy with the two people who are running for president.

No matter how you look at it, the real losers in this race are the middle class and the poor. I would like to hear what an independent person has to say so that I might have a better choice in who I might want to vote for president.

We need a change and that change should be a three-party system. Who knows? It might be better, then it might not, but we would have a choice.

Remember, this country didn’t start out as Republican and Democrat. Our Founding Fathers said we are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Right now, people are not happy. It takes two people in a household working hard to barely make a living. And to buy a home and to raise a family are harder yet.

Remember, Congress has to stop spending money to get this country back on track. It’s not about who is president.

Editor’s note: Listed under president on Pennsylvania’s Nov. 6 ballot will be candidates from the Democratic, Republican, Green and Libertarian parties.
