Ouch. For the first time since May 2008, the unemployment rate for the Johnstown labor market area is a full percentage point above the statewide figure.
Just how hard our region has been hurt economically came to light Tuesday in a front-page story by Bill Findley, retired workforce information specialist in Johnstown for the state Department of Labor and Industry.
Findley reported that in December, our seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased to 8.9 percent, while the statewide rate, also up, hit 7.9 percent.
What’s even scarier is that those figures don’t include any of the job loss fallout our region will experience from the upcoming closing of SCI-Cresson.
Just wondering whether the governor, secretary of corrections and other state leaders are yet aware of our plight, and, if so, what they intend to do about it.
It might be a good idea for area residents to send them a copy of the story, don’t you agree?
