Welcome to the race, Demo Agoris.
As you read here Sunday, Demo Agoris – a Libertarian Party candidate – will be on the ballot for the special election May 18 in the 12th Congressional District. He will go up against Republican Tim Burns and Democrat Mark Critz to see who will complete the late John Murtha’s term through year’s end.
Agoris would seem to be a longshot to beat out both of the traditional party candidates.
However, we hope his presence in the race allows for more issues to be discussed and additional viewpoints to be considered.
Actually, Agoris has been a candidate for the seat for some time, but was recently recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of State and will have his name on the ballot – right along with Burns and Critz.
Agoris told reporter Mike Faher that he hopes to “bring to light the agenda of the Libertarian Party and how the left and right agenda is destroying America and selling out America to foreign investors.”
We welcome the dialogue.
The political process should be about giving the people – the voters – choices concerning who might represent them in government.
But in the special-election process, both parties chose their candidates based on the whims of the state party chiefs and the district delegates – not the voting public.
Only in the primary election – which will also occur on May 18 – can any candidate who gets the required number of signatures put himself or herself before the voters. And even there, several candidates were pressured to pull out early and some did.
Will Demo Agoris be the next member of Congress from our region?
Not impossible, but highly unlikely.
Still, he will bring some worthwhile ideas to the campaign, which should in the end help voters make the best possible decision.
