Chris LeGrand says it’s not easy imitating a living legend.
The Shreveport, La., musician said it took him countless hours to develop the voice and mannerisms of one of rock ’n’ roll’s greatest living legends – Mick Jagger.
The Rolling Stones tribute band will bring all the charm and charisma of Jagger and company to a 7:30 p.m. concert on May 4 at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Richland Township.
“Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show” pays homage to the world’s greatest rock ’n’ roll band with a full-scale production complete with the look-alikes of Jagger, Keith Richards and the rest of the band members.
LeGrand knew he wanted to be a performer at age 12 when some girls came over to see his first garage band.
“I knew then that this was a great job,” he said.
LeGrand founded “Satisfaction” in 2001 with the goal of producing the first touring tribute show in honor of the Rolling Stones.
With more than 30 years’ experience in the music industry and a bachelor’s degree in business, LeGrand has succeeded.
From his pretend British accent to the form-fitting outfits, LeGrand said it is no easy task for any actor or musician to portray a legend whose image and style is imbedded in the viewer’s or listener’s mind.
“It takes years of practice to perfect such a task,” he said. “And even then, you must keep working at it all the time.”
Because Jagger’s mannerisms are unusual, LeGrand took special care in developing his character.
“I studied and practiced like it was a role for a movie, including watching hours and hours of video,” he said.
He found that duplicating Jagger’s voice and dance moves were equally challenging.
“The first thing I learned was the singing,” LeGrand said. “If you can’t sell the voice to the audience, all the dance moves in the world won’t convince them.”
LeGrand said “Satisfaction” is the only full-time touring show of its kind in the world.
The band concentrates on the Rolling Stones’ glory years from 1964 to 1981.
But selecting songs from the Stones’ body of work, which has spanned more than 50 years, is no easy task.
“We can’t do a four hour show because even then, we would miss a song someone wanted to hear,” he said.
The next best thing to the Rolling Stones may be “Satisfaction.”
The show will include popular hits such as “Angie,” “Wild Horses,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Start Me Up” and the band’s signature classic “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”
LeGrand said the highest compliment the band can receive is hearing people say: “You sounded just like them” or “You guys have this thing down.”
“Authentic is the word we love to hear,” he said. “We just want people to be smiling when they leave the show.”
In 2010, the show received its highest accolades ever as it was approved by the Rolling Stones to perform long-term engagements annually with the Walt Disney Corp.
LeGrand admires the Rolling Stones and relishes their performances before live audiences.
