The 25th annual Winterfest will be held today through Feb. 26 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

The yearly event, sponsored by the resort and WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh, showcases all types of snow and slope activities.

There will live entertainment, family activities, snow tubing and a torchlight parade.

Subway singer

Alice Tan Ridley, known as “The New York City Subway Idol,” will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Pitt-Johnstown campus, Richland Township.

“Oklahoma!” will be presented at 7:30 tonight and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Richland Performing Arts Center, One Academic Ave., Richland Township.

Celtic cinema

“Wales: Land of Song” will be the next installment of the Armchair Travel Series at 3 p.m. Sunday on the third floor of Johnstown Flood Museum, 304 Washington St., downtown Johnstown.

The film will explore Celts, castles, coal mines and mountain valleys.

Admission is $5 for JAHA members and $7 for nonmembers.

Children younger than 12 and accompanied by an adult will be admitted free.

Heritage celebration

Slovak Mardi Gras will be celebrated from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Venue of Merging Arts, 307 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

There will be potato haluski cooking demonstrations, a travelogue presentation on Slovakia and a genealogy and heritage display.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 6 to 11.

Musical behavior

Harlem in the 1930s will come to life when Band of Brothers Shakespeare Company presents the musical review “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 24 and 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at Westmont Hilltop Middle School, 827 Diamond Blvd., Westmont. 

The review will feature Katrina Bodenschatz, Adia Dobbins, Venus Hall, Jeff Webb and Tony Malvoisin.

Webb also will serve as musical director.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students.

Somber remembrance

A 67th anniversary remembrance of the Iwo Jima flag raising will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Franklin Borough Building.

The guest speaker will be Cambria County Commissioner Douglas Lengenfelder.

There will be a World War II memorabilia display by Ron Maxson.

Colors will be posted by Johnstown Marines, and Conemaugh Valley Detachment 287, Marine Corps League, will perform the firing detail.

Mystery benefit

“No Clue” murder-mystery dinner will be held at 6 p.m. March 3 at Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Reservation deadline is Wednesday.

The fundraiser will benefit Conemaugh Health System.

The cost is $40 per person.

Thoughtful music

Musician Mike Vavrek will perform from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. tonight at Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

He will play from his album “Buttons and Threads,” a collection of thought-provoking, honest songs he composed.

Church chow

A spaghetti dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church, 217 Fourth St., East Conemaugh.

Dinner will include spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and beverage.

Eat-in or take-out will be available. Tickets are $5.

A trio of musical events will be held at Venue of Merging Arts, 307 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Teen Night from 7:30 to 10 tonight will feature open mic with 15 Year Vendetta and a teen band.

Admission is $5 at the door, and there will be beverages and snacks available.

Don Aliquo Sr. & Jazz Friends will be back by popular demand from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

CD party

Christian hip-hop artist Michael “Child” Taylor will have a free-listening party beginning at 6 tonight in the Napa/Sonoma Gallery Room at Holiday Inn, Downtown, 250 Market St., Johnstown.

Taylor has been rapping for more than 10 years and will release his debut album “Officially Yours” during the listening party.

The CD is a compilation of songs telling of his personal growth.

Taylor is a minister at Works of Deliverance Fellowship International Ministries, 550 Park Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Valley Players of Ligonier will present the comedy  “Cookin’ With Gus” at 7:30 tonight and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ligonier Theater, 208 W. Main St.

Drumming sessions

“Rhythm of Life Design Intensive” will be presented by musician and teacher Jim Donovan from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Roundball champs

“The Mighty MACs,” a film based on the true story of the 1971-72 Immaculata College team, will be shown at 6:45 tonight at Alumni Hall on the campus of Mount Aloysius College, Cresson.

The team became the original Cinderella story in women’s basketball when it won three straight AIAW national championships between 1972 and 1974.

The film will be introduced by world-renowned women’s basketball coaching icon Theresa Grentz.

Dinner and a farce

The farce “One Toe in the Grave” will be presented by Bedford County Players tonight through Sunday and Feb. 24-26 at Homewood Spring House Estates, 150 Victoria Ave., Everett.

Performances tonight, Saturday and Feb. 24-25 are dinner theaters, and performances Sunday and Feb. 26 are the show only. 

The cost of the dinner theaters is $25, and the cost of the Sunday matinees, which will include light refreshments, is $13.

Sioux spirit

“Spiritual Tools for Life from a Lakota Sioux Perspective” will be presented by Bill Misener at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bedford County Arts Center, located in the Anderson House, 137 E. Pitt St., Bedford.

Misener was formally adopted into the Oglala band more than 35 years ago and has dedicated his life to the ways of the Lakota people.

The comedy-drama “On Golden Pond” will be presented by Altoona Community Theater at 8 tonight and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mishler Theater, 1208 12th Ave., Altoona.

Great outdoors

The 27th annual Allegheny Sport, Travel and Outdoor Show continues through Sunday at Monroeville Convention Center, 209 Mall Blvd.

Show hours are noon to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $10 for adults, and children ages 12 and younger will be admitted free with a paying adult.

Black history honors

“A Painting Is Worth a Thousand Words,” featuring artwork by Gregory Rance Thompson and Penelope Wilson, will be on display through Feb. 29 at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

The exhibit is in celebration of Black History Month.

Allied in art

The 2012 Winter Show of Allied Artists of Johnstown will be on display through Feb. 25 at AmeriServ Financial, Main and Franklin streets, downtown Johnstown.

The show has 45 works, juried by artist Julie Englemann of Indiana, Pa.

Award recipients are Jim Richey’s digital infrared photo “Farm in the Dell”; Mary Wiley-Lewis’ pastel “Shepherdess”; Donna Holdsworth’s mixed acrylic collage “In a Coat He Borrowed from James Dean”; and Larry Mallory’s watercolor “One Rusty Bucket.”

The exhibit can be viewed at no cost during regular business hours in the bank lobby.

Slovak art

“The Legacy of SS. Cyril and Methodius,” an exhibit of photographs by Nicholas Bocher and other aspects of Slovak heritage, will be on display through Feb. 29 at Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

The documentary film “Interrupted Lives: Catholic Sisters Under Communism” will be shown at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The exhibit is being presented in conjunction with the Slovak Heritage Association of the Laurel Highlands.

Seasonal photographs

“Seasons of Western Pennsylvania: The Photography of Donald Robinson” will be on display through April 28 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown in the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of Pitt-Johnstown, Richland Township.

The exhibition features approximately 40 photographs from the museum’s permanent collection.

The award-winning Pittsburgh photographer has won 25 gold medals for Best of Show in various international photography salons.

Old-fashioned photos

“With Old World Eyes: European Photography from the Permanent Collection” will be on display through May 12 in the Margery Wolf-Kuhn Gallery at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto on the campus of St. Francis University.

The exhibition, which has 40 works, shows how the older photochemical methods continue to serve many uses and applications and focuses on the work of European and European-born photographers in the museum’s permanent collection.

Dual exhibits

“Artists of the 21st Century,” the annual student art exhibition featuring more than 200 student-created works, will be on display through March 24 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto on the campus of St. Francis University and from Feb. 24 through April 15 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley, One Boucher Lane, Ligonier.

Schools in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Indiana and Somerset counties will be featured in the Loretto exhibition, while schools in Westmoreland and Fayette counties will be exhibited in Ligonier.

An opening reception will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. March 4 for the Ligonier exhibit.

Parking for the Ligonier reception will be available at Fort Ligonier only, with free shuttles to the museum.

Schools represented in the Loretto exhibition include Altoona Area High School, Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, Blacklick Valley elementary and high schools, Cambria Heights Elementary School, East Side Elementary School, Forest Hills High School, Indiana Area Senior High School, Northern Cambria middle and high schools, Richland Elementary School and St. Michael School.

Members’ works

The 19th annual Members Invitational Exhibit will be on display through March 2 at Bedford County Arts Center at the Anderson House, 137 E. Pitt St., Bedford.

This multimedia show and sale, which is presented by Bedford County Arts Council, includes a variety of media and techniques.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Prints and posters

Two new exhibits are opening at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, 1210 11th  Ave.

“Twentieth Century Prints: Gifts of Allwyn and Ellen Levine” are on display through April 21 in the museum’s George A. and Herbert L. Wolf Gallery.

The exhibition features 45 prints by 20th century printmakers such as Will Barnet, Leonard Baskin, Jim Dine, Jane Freilicher, Nancy Graves, Peter Milton, Philip Pearlstein and Fairfield Porter.

“What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been: Selections from the Mark del Costello Poster Collection” will be on display through April 28 in the museum’s Shirley and Fred A. Pechter Gallery and Paul I. Detwiler Education Center.

This exhibition features more than 60 music posters of rock legends such as The Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and the Sex Pistols.

The exhibition includes poster art by Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Peter Max, Milton Glaser, Victor Moscoso and Tadanori Yokoo.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
