'Wonderful Whimsy III' new exhibit at Art Works

“Wonderful Whimsy III,” an exhibition of one-of-a-kind artworks inspired by the whimsical aspect of life, will be on display today through Dec. 31 at Art Works in Johnstown, 413 Third Ave. in Cambria City.

The exhibit will feature metal sculptures, painters, paper cutters and wood-carvers from Pennsylvania and Ohio.

A reception from 6 to 9 tonight will feature refreshments, food and entertainment.

An Artisan Boutique will showcase works by artists in the new AW Gallery Shoppe as well as returning favorites.

The boutique will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Resident artist Thomasa Pridgen will feature her upcycled fashions on live models throughout the opening reception.

Returning “Whimsy” artists include metal worker Martha Murphy of Waking Bear Studio in Friedens and nature illustrator Terry Smith of Wild Ravens Studio in Johnstown.

New artists are Nancy Shelly of Bethlehem, Northampton and Lehigh counties, with Scherenscittle, or paper cutting; Mary Hamilton of Sky Flower Art, Rimersburg, Clarion County, with linocut prints; and Larry and Paige Koosed of Perrysburg, Ohio, with American primitive woodworks.

    Painting on a different plane is a positive study for artist and Altoona native Barbara Wachter. Her latest exhibition, “Seeing the Invisible: Paintings by Barbara Wachter,” opens Friday at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto. The exhibition features 35 canvases of contemporary impressionism that will be on display in the museum’s Margery Wolf-Kuhn Gallery.
