Saturdays in March will bring fun and learning.

Classes for the 2010 Chase the Chill Winter Weekends will be in session on the Pitt-Johns-town campus in Richland Township and at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Jeanne Susko, director of Community Education and Outreach at Pitt-Johnstown, which develops the classes, said there are new and old classes.

A class on West African dance on March 27 is a highlight in the offerings of the Mind and Body series.

The class also is offered at Bottle Works.

“We were interested in bringing this to the campus,” Susko said. “It’s a freestyle dance workshop.”

There also are classes on belly dancing, yoga, massage, cholesterol, weight loss and positive energy offered in the Mind and Body series.

Saturday Cartoon Alternatives for Kids will offer plenty of fun opportunities for children.

New classes are Spring Paper Marbling on March 20 and Signs of Spring: Paper Quilt on March 27.

“These will expose kids to art,” Susko said. “They are hands-on arts classes.”

Mystery Madness on March 27 will have participants ages 7 to 10 learning how to be detectives like Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys.

The Dark Continent for those ages 9 and older will explore Africa with crafts, music and drumming on March 6.

“The presenter, Jackie Triplin, will wear historic garb as the children celebrate another culture,” Susko said.

On March 6, Fiesta Mexicana will take children ages 5 to 7 south of the border as they learn Spanish, create crafts and have a Mexican snack.

Several acting classes with a different spin also will be available.

There will be a lot of cooking in a series of classes at Bottle Works.

Polish Bake Shop: Babka and Rogaliki is a new class featuring two Polish treats. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon March 27.

Babka is a sweet bread that can be laced with lemon or chocolate. Rogaliki is a croissant slathered with plum marmalade and topped with icing.

A class on Perfect Polish Pierogi will step outside the box from 9 a.m. to noon March 13.

In addition to traditional potato and cheese pierogi, mushroom and sauerkraut dinner pierogi and strawberry dessert pierogi covered with melted butter and sugar will be featured.

“We’ve had this class before, and we’re bringing it back,” Susko said.

There also will be a class on homemade nut rolls from 10 to 11:30 a.m. March 6 and a class on Ukrainian Pysanky Egg Art from 1 to 4 p.m. March 6.

All supplies will be provided for the Pysanky class, in which participants will complete two finished eggs by incorporating ancient symbolism and techniques.

There also will be classes on baby-sitting, oil painting, eBay basics, grant writing, adult CPR and digital photography at the Pitt-Johnstown campus.

Discounts are available for early registration, senior citizens, Pitt-Johnstown faculty, staff, students and alumni and East Hills Business Association and Chamber of Commerce members.

Class registration is first- come, first-served.
