Religion in brief | New Day will host hymn sing on Sunday

A Thanksgiving hymn sing, sponsored by New Day Inc., will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Oakland United Methodist Church, 1504 Bedford St., Johnstown.

Song leaders are Cheryl Keafer and Matt Price.

Dave Hirko is the organist.

An offering will be taken to benefit New Day.

Light refreshments will be offered. Child care will be provided.

Festival of song planned in Portage

A festival of song, witness talk and breakfast will be held from 8 to 9:30 Nov. 24 at Sacred Heart Center, 1872 Munster Road, Portage.

Music will be provided by Susan Potvin and Karen Herrmann of Community of God’s Love of Steubenville, Ohio.

Deadline is Wednesday.

Believer’s Fellowship

The Rev. Michele Tunstall will speak on “Dream Big, Pray Bold” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Believer’s Fellowship Family Church, 551 Cambria Ave., Revloc.

Bill Hugill will lead the congregation in worship.

Nursery and children’s and youth church will be available during the service.

Hugill and the Rev. Brian Tunstall will teach on “Five Fold Power” during Midweek Overflow at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Bethany UM

“A Night of Joy,” featuring a spaghetti dinner and comedy entertainment by Oakland United Methodist Drama Team, will be held at 6 tonight at Bethany United Methodist Church, 112 Leventry Road, Johnstown.

Profits will support the Johnstown District Mission project, orphans and the children of Zimbabwe.

Donations are $12 for adults and $5 for children.

Tickets are available at the door.

Bethel UM

The Rev. Eddie Patterson will talk about “God’s Cure for Sin,” based on Hebrews 9:22-28, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Bethel United Methodist Church, 215 Whistler St., Hollsopple.

Sunday school will begin at 9:15.

Bethel UM

The Rev. Don L. Poole will speak on “Remembering Who and Whose We Are” during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at Bethel United Methodist Church, Forest Hills Drive, Salix.

Sunday school will begin at 9:45.

Youth RUSH will meet at 6 p.m.

Beulah UM

Thanksgiving and Harvest Sunday will be celebrated during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Beulah United Methodist Church, 716 Bedford St., Johnstown.

The Rev. Jeffrey Popson will deliver the message “Unhappy? Give Thanks!” based on Deuteronomy 8:7-18.

A contemporary service will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday school will follow at 9:25.

Bright Hope

Bright Hope Parish will pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child of Samaritan’s Purse at 3 p.m. Sunday at Belsano (Red Brick) Church.

A covered-dish dinner will follow.

The parish will hold a combined Thanksgiving Eve service at 7 Wednesday at Nanty Glo United Methodist Church, 998 Lloyd St.

The choir will sing a selection of songs.

The Rev. John Hickman will lead the service.

Carpenter Park

An evening of Christ-centered music and worship will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Carpenter Park Mennonite Church, 2662 Carpenters Park Road, Davidsville.

Musicians include United, Joe Inman, Dan Becker, Wayne Kaufman and Linda Biery.

An offering will be taken to benefit Kenya’s Best Christian Camps.

Community church

Pastor Charles H. Zimmerman will deliver the message “God’s Degree: You Are My Witnesses” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Community Open Door Church, Menoher Boulevard and Luzerne Street, Johnstown.

Marlene Beckwith will share the children’s message.

Conemaugh church

“Living on the Edge of Eternity,” with Scripture from 1 Peter 4:7-11, will be the sermon during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Conemaugh Church of the Brethren, 1256 William Penn Ave., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Nursery and children’s church will be available.

Preschool play day will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Bible study begins at 7 p.m.

Faith UM

David Evans will deliver the message during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Faith United Methodist Church, 369 Glessner Road, Johnstown.

Harvey Hahl of The Gideons will speak.

Sunday school will follow at 10:40.

Ferndale UM

Bill Griffith Jr. will deliver a message based on Matthew 6:25-34 during the 10:40 a.m. Sunday service at Ferndale United Methodist Church, 701 Vickroy Ave., Johnstown.

Harvey Hahl of The Gideons will speak.

The choir will sing “Thanks Be To God,” directed by Traci Weaver.

Greeters will be Karen Miller and Lois Jenkins.

Annabelle Kauffman is the nursery helper.

Zach Findley will be the acolyte.

The youth fellowship will make cookies Sunday afternoon.

First Lutheran

Holy Communion will be celebrated at 5:30 tonight and 10:45 a.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., Johnstown.

The Rev. Eleanor Abarno will preach from Mark 13.

Confirmation students will help lead the 10:45 Sunday service.

A congregational meeting and healing service will follow.

First Presbyterian

A  worship service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., Johnstown.

First Presbyterian

Holy Communion will be celebrated during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Somerset Ave., Windber.

The Rev. Cynthia Cadenhead will deliver the message “The Grace of Giving.”

The Rev. Bruce Cadenhead will lead a Bible study on the Book of Numbers at 9:30.

First UM

The Rev. Larry Rowe will deliver the sermon “Faith Is ...” during the 9:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at First United Methodist Church, 436 Vine St., Johnstown.

A special offering will be taken to benefit Children and Youth Services.

Bible study will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Franklin Street United Methodist Church.

A combined Thanksgiving Eve service will be held at 7 Wednesday.

Grace Brethren

Pastor Rick Horner will speak on “Why Is It So Hard To Be Thankful” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Grace Brethren Church, Oak and Second streets, East Conemaugh.

Grove Avenue UM

A joint worship service with Moxham United Methodist Cooperative – consisting of Grove Avenue, Park Avenue and Christ United Methodist churches – will be held at  10 a.m. Sunday at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The Rev. Alyce Weaver-Dunn, district superintendent, will deliver the message “Three Simple Rules.”

A joint choir and praise band will be featured.

The charge conference will follow the service.

Nursery will be available.

Johnstown fellowship

Pastor Gary L. Tustin will speak about “He Is Able,” taken from Hebrews 7:25, during the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services at Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship, 3429 Elton Road.

Pastor Jim Gay will speak on “Thanks Be To God” at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Connection Café will begin at 6 p.m. PACT youth and children’s classes follow at 7.

Laurel Trinity

A blessing of hunters will be held during the 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. Sunday worship services at Laurel Trinity Lutheran Church, 7520 Somerset Pike, Jennerstown.

Sunday school will begin at 10.

Communion class will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Bible study will be held at  8 a.m. Wednesday at Coal Miners Café in Jennerstown.

Maple Spring

The Rev. Guy Myers will speak about “Thanksgiving’s Empty Chair,” with Scripture from Luke 15:25-32, during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, 106 Spring Road, Hollsopple.

Children’s church will be available for children ages 4 through Grade 6.

Sunday school will begin at 9:40.

Mount Hope UM

A worship service for Mount Hope United Methodist Church, 258 Mount Hope Road, South Fork, will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Sunday school will begin at 10:30. The youth will meet at 6 p.m.

Moxham Brethren

The Rev. William Wenger, pastor, will deliver the message “Living the Good Life or the God Life?” with Scripture readings taken from Deuteronomy 8:1-18, during the 10:10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Moxham Church of the Brethren, 536 Grove Ave., Johnstown.

Lori Beck will lead the story time with the children.

The cathedral choir will sing “What a Wonderful World,” directed by Bette Poltrack.

Sunday school will begin at 9.

Moxham Lutheran

Worship services will be held at 8:15 and 11 a.m. Sunday at Moxham Lutheran Church, 500 Park Ave., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30 in the sanctuary.

Women’s Bible study will be held at 6:45 p.m. Monday.

Worship with Holy Communion will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Good News Room.

On Thanksgiving Eve, Holden prayer will begin at 7:15.

Park Avenue UM

Park Avenue United Methodist Church will join Christ United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave.,        Johnstown, for a 10 a.m. Sunday service. The district superintendent will speak.

Charge conference will follow the service.

A Thanksgiving breakfast will begin at 7:30 Thursday at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 700 Park Ave., Johnstown.

Pleasant Hill Baptist

Family Day will be celebrated during the 10:50 a.m. Sunday worship service at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 205 Peelor St., Prospect.

The Rev. Clyde Williams Jr., associate minister at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, will speak. The Rev. Andrew W. Tilly of Philadelphia, former pastor, also will attend. Music will be provided by the mass choir.

Dinner will be served after the service.

There will be no Thanksgiving Day service.

Roxbury church

The Rev. Brian Simmons, pastor of Roxbury Church of the Brethren, 112 Sell St., Johnstown, will speak on “Keep Up Your Courage,” with Scripture from Acts 22:30 and 23:11, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

The cathedral choir will sing “O Bless the Lord, My Soul,” directed by Melanie Shiley, and accompanied by Laura Krouse, pianist.

Sunday school starts at 9:30.

Bible study will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Choir practice will follow at 7.

An adult fellowship breakfast will be held at 8:30 at Our Sons’ Family Restaurant, Broad Street in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Roxbury St. Paul’s

The Rev. Wayne D. Sedei will deliver the message “Provoked,” based on Hebrews 10:11-25, during the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services at Roxbury St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 160 Derby St.,  Johnstown. Sunday school will begin at 9:15.

Summit Chapel UM

The Rev. John H. Weaver, pastor of Summit Chapel United Methodist Church, 2142 William Penn Ave., Johnstown, will preach on “We Are To Remember God Has Given Us the Strength to Deal With All That Comes To Us,” based on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-16, during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service.

Sunday school will begin at 10:30 for youth and adults.

An ecumenical community Thanksgiving worship service, sponsored by Conemaugh Valley Ministerium, will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Kevin McNamara, pastor of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, will be the guest preacher. Summit Chapel Chancel Choir, under the direction of Dale Wicks, and accompanied by Carol Gresh, will sing the anthem “A Canon of Thanks.”

The offering received will be given to the Nanty Glo Food Pantry.

Fellowship will follow.

Walnut Grove

The Rev. Ron Barto will deliver the message “Oh Give Thanks to the Lord,” with Scripture from Psalm 107, during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, 1068 Bedford St., Johnstown.

The choir will sing “Let Us Give Our Thanks.”

Sunday Blast for children ages 4 through 12 and adult Sunday school will begin at 9.

Westmont UM

The Rev. Kevin Rea will preach on “I Wish You Enough” during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at Westmont United Methodist Church, 1428 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Windber Calvary UM

The Rev. John Snyder will deliver the message “Beginning or End,” based on the Gospel of Mark 13:1-8, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Windber Calvary United Methodist Church, 1800 Stockholm Ave.

The Chancel Choir will sing “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” under the direction and accompaniment of Robert Shaffer.

Pat Bossi will be the organist.

Ed Price will be the lay reader.

There will be a children’s sermonette.

A staffed nursery will be provided.

An innovative worship service will be held at 7 p.m.

Zion Lutheran

Liturgy of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, 613 Locust St., downtown Johnstown, with Gospel readings from Mark 13:1-8.

Church school will begin at  9, with fellowship at 9:30.

A midweek Liturgy of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Memorial Chapel and a Liturgy of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day with a Gospel reading from Matthew 6:25-33.
