“The Tragedy of Julius Caesar” will be presented with a contemporary twist by Band of Brothers Shakespeare Company at 7 tonight and Saturday and Wednesday through July 21 at the main pavilion in Stackhouse Park, Westmont entrance.

Root music

Pittsburgh band Rusted Root will headline Laurel Arts’ pre-Somerfest celebration Saturday at Dressler Center for the Arts, 214 S. Harrison Ave., Somerset.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 7.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Seating will be general admission.

Festival fun

The 65th annual parish festival at St. Therese Roman Catholic Church, 536 Decker Ave. in the West End section of Johnstown, will be held tonight through Sunday.

Grounds will be open from 7 to 9 tonight, 5 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Ride prices will be reduced from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and games will be available for children.

Music will be provided by the Rhythm Masters from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a raffle with prizes, and a fireworks display will be held at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

A variety of ethnic and other foods will be available.

A spaghetti dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the church hall. Tickets for the dinner are $6 for adults and $3 for children.



St. Clement Roman Catholic Church festival and car cruise will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday on the church grounds at 114 Lindberg Ave. in Upper Yoder Township.

Sign ups for the car cruise will begin at 10.

The registration fee is $10 for cars or motorcycles.

The first 200 entries will receive a free T-shirt and food coupon.

Food offerings will include an international grill with varied prices and a roast beef dinner for $8. Take-outs will be available.

There will be a polka Mass at 10:30 a.m. featuring Rosie and the Jammers. The band also will perform from 1 to 4 p.m.

The band Colossal Kareoke will play from 4 to 6.

There also will be a bake sale, basket booth and a rock climbing wall.

Family fun

The 82nd annual Ferndale Volunteer Fire Association Jubilee will be held Monday through July 21 at the grounds along Ferndale Avenue.

An opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, with the parade at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The jubilee will be open from 6:30 to 11 nightly, with one-price ride bracelets for $10.

Children’s matinees will be held from 1 to 4 Wednesday and July 21, with ride bracelets for $6.

Nightly prizes will be drawn at 11, and the winner must be present to win.

The kitchen will be open from noon Sunday to midnight July 21.

Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days” will be presented by (un)Apologetic Productions at 8 tonight and Saturday and July 20 and 21 at Art Works in Johnstown, 413 Third Ave. in  Cambria City.

Empty nest

The domestic comedy “Alone Together” will be presented through July 22 at Mountain Playhouse, Jennerstown.

Curtain times will be 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

A motorcycle run to raise money for a school-supplies outreach will be held Saturday at Roxbury-St. Paul United Methodist Church, 160 Derby St., Johnstown.

Registration will begin at 1 p.m., with the run starting at 2.

Book bargains

Friends of the Cambria County Library Inclined to Read Bookstore will feature all types of cookbooks on sale for $1 for the month of July at Cambria County Library, 248 Main St., downtown Johnstown.

A celebration of the second anniversary of the bookstore will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 23 featuring cookbooks and other paperback books five for $1 and a variety of other genres for $1.  

There will be baked goods available for sale.

Bookstore hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Outdoors concerts

Whiskey River Panhandlers will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday as part of the Concerts in the Park series at Central Park Gazebo, downtown Johnstown.

Civic Concert Band will perform as part of the free Summer Concerts on the Green at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the grounds of Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

Johnstown Reed Band will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Central Park Gazebo, downtown Johnstown.

The band D’Verse will perform in a free concert on the lawn sponsored by Conemaugh Township Area Historical Society from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at 106 S. Main St., Davidsville.

Cool Breeze, four musicians who play early classics to modern day jazz standards, will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday on the Diamond in Ligonier as part of a free series of Sunday evening band concerts sponsored by the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Guitarist Dave Howsare will perform as part of the free Summer Music on the Square concert series sponsored by the Pennsylvania Consort at 2 p.m. Sunday at the gazebo at Pitt and Penn streets in downtown Bedford.

Book talk

Authors Brad Clemenson and Jim Penna will speak about their new book, “Murtha: War Fighter, Fighting for the Soul of America,” during a brown-bag lunch at noon Monday at Cambria County Library, 248 Main St., downtown Johnstown.

Penna is a former broadcast journalist. Clemenson is a former Murtha staffer.

The book is about the circumstances that prompted Murtha to call for the redeployment of troops serving in Iraq and dives into Murtha’s life and his service in the Vietnam War and in Congress.

The event is free and open to the public, who are invited to bring their lunch and eat during the presentation.

The 275-page book is available online and will be available for purchase at the program for $15.95.

Reading dreams

A summer reading program will be held through July 28 at Windber Public Library, 1909 Graham Ave., Windber.  

The theme is “Dream Big – Read!” and special story times will be held at 10:30 a.m. July 20.  

Children in preschool through Grade 6 as of May are invited to participate.  

Registration is required, and readers are asked to read as many books as they can during the program.  

Tokens received for each book read will be entered into a prize drawing.

Beautiful bluegrass

The third annual Southern Cove Bluegrass Festival will be held beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Southern Cove Power Reunion Grounds, 145 Cave Road, New Enterprise.

Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the gate for Saturday and $25 in advance and $30 at the gate for Sunday.

Tickets for both days are $30 in advance and $45 at gate.

Tickets for children ages 5 to 12 are $10. Children younger than age 5 will be admitted free.

Camping is available for $10 per night or $15 for weekend.

Proceeds benefit Southern Cove Fire Company.

Nature’s call

Junior Ranger Nature Discovery Days will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon each Saturday through July 28 at the picnic area at Johnstown Flood National Historic Site, Sidman.

The free events are for children ages 7 to 10, and a parent or guardian must accompany each child.

Children should bring their own lunch.

Reservations are required, and there is a limit of 12 children per Saturday.

Flood tours

“Journey Around Lake Conemaugh” van tours will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. daily through Aug. 26 at Johnstown Flood National Memorial, South Fork.

The one-hour tours will begin at the visitor center and travel to the north and south abutments of the South Fork Dam, as well as the clubhouse building.  

Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

Tour is included with park admission.

Free lunch(es)

Bedford County Players will stage Jack Sharkey's comedy “100 Lunches” today through Sunday at Homewood Springhouse Estates, 150 Victoria Ave., Everett.

The play features a successful mystery playwright who agrees to help his worst critic write a play of her own if she will pay for his lunch, and the two fall in love in addition to getting the play on Broadway.

Performances tonight and Saturday are dinner theaters, with the meal at 6 p.m. followed by the show at 7.  

Sunday’s matinee performance will begin at 2 p.m. and will include light refreshments.

The cost for the dinner theaters is $25, and the matinee is $13.

Healing art

“The Art of Healing Exhibition: Reflections 2012” will be on view through Aug. 10 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

The exhibition features drawings, paintings, collage and woodcarvings created by patients of the museum’s Healthcare Partnership Program residencies at the John P. Murtha Neuroscience and Pain Institute.

Realistic paintings

“People, Places and Things: Works by William DeBernardi” will be on display through Aug. 12 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley, One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South in Ligonier.

The exhibition features 136 oil paintings by the renowned Pittsburgh artist, who primarily focuses on portraits, still lifes and nocturnal landscapes.

Southern exposure

“Southern Light: American Impressionist Women from the Hunstville Museum of Art” will be on display through Aug. 11 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto on the campus of St. Francis University, Loretto.

The national traveling exhibit features 54 pieces from the 406-piece Sellars Collection at the Alabama museum.

The paintings in the exhibit are from 1850 to 1940, and there also are two bronze sculptures.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Artistic faith

“Seeing and Believing: Art Encounters Faith” will be on display through Dec. 8 in the Margery Wolf-Kuhn Gallery at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto on the campus of St. Francis University.

The 45-piece exhibition features paintings, drawings, prints and photographs representing Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and American Indian spirituality.

Dual exhibit

“From Individual to Universal: The Art of Philip Brulia and Evgeny Krayushkin” will be on display through Aug. 18 at the George A. and Herbert T. Wolf Gallery at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona in the Brett Building at 1210 Eleventh Ave., downtown Altoona.

Brulia’s work is focused on visual detail, with striking individual beauty coupled with well-refined technique.

Krayushkin is primarily focused on the intellectual process and uses the technique, relief and visuals for the purpose of conveying a thought and enhancing the story.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
