There is no cover-up about the purpose of an upcoming costume party.
Carnevale Masquerade Ball “Unmask the Cure,” the 15th annual Pink Ribbon Ball, will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at Pasquerilla Conference Center, 301 Napoleon St., downtown Johnstown.
The title and theme for this year’s event, which benefits the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, education and services, originated from co-chairwoman Marla Walther of Southmont, who lived in Italy for several years and has personal experience with the Italian Carnevale.
Carnevale, also known as carnival or Mardi Gras, is celebrated in Italy and many places around the world 40 days before Easter, a final party before Ash Wednesday and the restrictions of Lent.
“I wanted to bring the spirit of Carnevale to Johnstown,” Walther said.
She said she will be dressed as a woman from the 18th century, and she is urging guests to wear costumes of that time period.
“It’s the Renaissance masquerade-style of clothing,” she added.
Walther and her co-chairwoman, Irene Hernandez of Southmont, have made Carnevale masks, which will be available to guests to enhance their costumes.
Walther said the purchase of a mask will gain a guest entry into a masquerade costume contest.
“If you have your own mask with your costume, you still have to buy one of these masks to be in the contest,” Walther said.
Hernandez said most of the masks weren’t hard to make.
“We used papier-mache, lace, fabric, beads, glitter and feathers,” Hernandez said. “I had more fun doing them than I’ve had in years.”
Three handmade signature masks, two painted by Walther and one a corroboration between Walther and Hernandez, will be auctioned.
Photographs of costumed guests who are participating in the contest will be shown on the conference center’s big screen, and a winner will be chosen.
The evening will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvre at 6, followed by a sit-down Italian dinner.
Silent auction items, which will be on display in the foyer, will include Pittsburgh Steelers tickets, guest passes for golf, lunch at Bedford Springs, jewelry and tickets to the Pennsylvania Center for the Performing Arts.
Hernandez said more silent and live auction items are needed, as well as sponsors.
“We depend on individuals and businesses to donate auction items,” Hernandez said. “The proceeds from them are a large part of the money raised.”
Band of Brothers Shakespeare Company will provide live performances, and Walther and Hernandez are looking to enlist violinists from Johnstown Symphony Orchestra to serve as strolling musicians.
Music for dancing will be provided by The Groove Doctors of Pittsburgh.
The honorary chairwoman for this year’s event is cancer survivor Wendy Hollern Spencer.
Tickets are $100 for an individual ticket or $1,500 per table.
