Pitt's Men's Glee Club in concert for music series

Harmonizing voices will bring joy to a local musical series.

Chamber Music Series of Greater Johnstown will present the University of Pittsburgh’s Men’s Glee Club at 7 p.m. March 20 at First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., downtown Johnstown.

Glee club director Richard Teaster said most of the group’s selections will be sung a cappella.

“We’ll do the same repertoire as our tour to Italy and Croatia in May,” Teaster said.

“That ranges from renaissance to 20th and 21st century tunes – Latin church music to Billy Joel.”

The glee club does an international tour every three years and tours in the states the other years during spring break.

They have performed in Texas, Chicago, New York City and New Orleans.

Teaster said the group, which will bring 58 of its members, has not sung in Johnstown during his 10-year tenure as director.

“We’re really excited about this concert,” said board president Victoria Czarnek.

“The glee club is truly an excellent choral ensemble that anyone who has ever sung in a choir will appreciate. What makes it particularly special is the many local ties the group has to Johnstown.”

Two glee club members, Nicholas Czarnek and Mark Ellenberger, are Johnstown residents.

Czarnek, a sophomore engineering student, is the son of Robert and Victoria Czarnek of Richland Township.

Ellenberger, a junior majoring in business, is the son of Tom and Elisa Ellenberger of Westmont.

Victoria Czarnek was impressed when she heard the glee club perform at its 2008 Christmas concert.

“I was aware of their reputation before that, and the quality of their performance has been consistently superb, so we knew they would put on a good show in Johnstown,” Czarnek said.

“There are so many church choirs and other choral groups in Johnstown, and we thought many people would enjoy this performance.”

Kim Rauch, current director of Richland High School’s choral program, was the director of the glee club years ago and will bring his concert choir for a master class before the concert.

The choir will perform several songs for the preconcert event at 7, then join the glee club in singing “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” with piano accompaniment, during the concert.

Teaster said the glee club has combined with other groups to sing before, but this will be the first time he has done a master class.

“They will pick a couple pieces from their repertoire that they’ve been working on, and I will listen to what they’ve been doing,” Teaster said.

“I’ll be like a coach. I’ll listen to dynamics, musicality, phrasing and vowel formation. I’ll finesse and polish what they bring.”

Membership in the glee club is open to any male Pitt undergraduate student who passes an audition.

“We have a few graduate students when their schedules permit,” Teaster said.

“We encourage undergraduates to sing all four years. Mainly they’re interrupted by their academic schedules. Most of those who join are committed to sing.”
