With a fresh lineup of classes and expert teachers, spring at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County is about to blossom.
The spring session of classes will be held March 22 through April 28 at the arts center, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.
Rose Mary Hagadus, arts center executive director, is getting a good response from a newsletter sent to arts center members and said there still is room for the public to get involved.
“It was such a rough winter that we scaled back our schedule of classes because we realize with nice weather coming, people want to get outdoors,” Hagadus said.
“But we have a core set of classes, such as pottery, decorative painting and photography that always prove popular.”
For the first time in 18 months, “The Art of Calligraphy” will be offered on Mondays from March 22 through April 26. The class will be instructed by Amanda Fettro.
“This is an introductory class where students will learn about pen position, pen strokes and building letters,” Hagadus said.
“They will create projects such as personal enclosure cards and wall hangings.”
Another course in demand each session is acrylic landscape painting, which is being taught by Alan Rauch.
For each Wednesday from March 24 to April 28, students of all levels will learn the finer points of landscape art.
“Alan is adept at working with advanced students one-on-one while never neglecting the beginners in the class,” Hagadus said.
“It’s an informative, fun class that welcomes all levels of artists.”
All adult classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. except for two yoga classes, which will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesdays from March 23 through April 27 and on Thursdays from March 25 through April 29, and a second pottery class, which will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesdays from March 24 through April 28.
“Yoga has grown to expand it to three sessions,” Hagadus said.
But if your tastes lean toward a little more lively activity, an adult workshop titled “Bollywood Dancing” with Avani Kolli may be ideal.
The session will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 10 and participants will have an opportunity to learn about the latest Indian dance trends.
“Avani is a classical-trained dancer who has performed extensively throughout the region,” Hagadus said.
“She has taken the traditional version of Indian dance and given it a contemporary approach. It’s a great way to dance away stress.”
A new workshop – “Mad Hatters Easter Party” – for children ages 3 to 7 will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Instructors Melinda Baker, Sande Staieb and Lida Hood are asking children to get dressed in their fanciest or most outlandish outfit to join in the fun.
The children will create outrageous hats to wear at a party, where a surprise guest will hop into town.
A new children’s class invites students from ages 6 to 10 to step into the Third Dimension on Mondays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. beginning March 22 and continuing through April 26.
Hood will help students create a 3-D storybook theater, make “jive” puppets from tin and acrylic mosaics made from dried acrylic paint chips.
“Items will be hand-built using modeling clay and found objects to form an assemblage,” Hagadus said.
“All supplies are provided.”
Other children’s classes include art treasures, thrown pottery and critter creations.
