These women are not offended when people refer to them with the “B” word. In fact, they adopted it as part of their group’s name.
Four Bitchin’ Babes will present “Hormonal Imbalance: A Mood Swinging Musical Revue” at 7:30 p.m. April 23 at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Richland Township.
Sally Fingerett of Columbus, Ohio, one of the original members of the group that has been in existence for 20 years, said the word “bitchin’ ” is from the George Lucas film “American Graffiti.”
“It’s a California surfer term that means very cool,” Fingerett explained. “So, it’s a campy way to say we’re cool. We’re very man-friendly.”
The show features Fingerett, Debi Smith, Nancy Moran and Deirdre Flint – four women from four different cities with four very different lives.
“We’re all composers, singers and comediennes,” Fingerett said. “The show is a musical revue with storytelling and songs and no set.
“We hold life up to our own wacky view of the world. It’s a fun show.“
The Babes write their own songs, record them and try them on tour.
“Each of us gets a turn in the spotlight while the others sing harmony and play in the background,” Fingerett said. “That girl’s life is held up to the light.”
Past recordings include “Gabby Road – Out of the Mouths of Babes,” “The Babes – Beyond Bitchin’ ” and “Some Assembly Required.”
Currently they are performing two tours, “Hormonal Imbalance” and a show taken from their newest recording, “Diva Nation: Where Music, Laughter and Girlfriends Reign.”
“Since we wrote them, it’s easy to switch gears,” Fingerett said. “In 20 years, I’ve only missed one show. I hope I’m doing this when I’m 80.”
Fingerett started out on the Babes tour as a new mother, and is now into her second marriage, blending three teenagers into her family.
Smith has an adult special-needs son; Moran is part of a double-income couple with no children; and Flint is single, living the hip, sophisticated life.
“We have four unique lives, and our musical genres go from country to jazz to folk,” Fingerett said.
“Our underlying commonality is that we’re all women.”
The Babes had their start with Christine Lavin, the creative force behind the original concept of putting women’s lives on display through song.
Lavin had just released a compilation CD of winter folk songs by her singer-songwriter friends and decided to put together a road show.
The first Babes were Lavin, Fingerett, Patty Larkin and Megon McDonough.
After traveling from Chicago to Boulder, Colo., Salt Lake City, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston and New York, the women ended their first tour in 1990 in Washington, D.C.
Lavin decided to record their show in Alexandria, Va., and the Bitchin’ Babes were born, she said.
