Artists-in-residence exhibit will showcase talents

Four area artists will not have to venture far from their studios to display their latest works.

“We Are All in This Together” is an exhibition by artists-in-residence who not only work at Art Works in Johnstown! but also display their talents in the expansive gallery at 413 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

The exhibition will showcase a variety of pieces by Holly Lees, professional photographer; Thomasa Pridgen of Thomasa Studio; Justin Guffrie of Guffrie Guitars; and Travis and Todd Stiffler, a father–son team delving in restoration and painting, respectively.

A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday to launch the exhibit, which will be on display through April 6.

Rosemary Pawlowski, Art Works board member, said the exhibition is a good example of how artists can take advantage of the Art Works complex.

“It is the perfect place where artists can create, teach and sell their works,” Pawlowski said.

“Ask any of the artists who lease studios there and they will tell you about the growth spurt their art has taken, how the synergy of artists working in a communal space inspires each of them and complements the different disciplines.”

For Lees, the exhibit is an opportunity to showcase her photographs of the residents of Standing Rock Lakota Sioux Reservation in McLaughlin, S.D.

Pridgen will display her outfits and jewelry made of repurposed and recyclable materials.

“For this gallery showing, I’ve created a female warrior costume complete with a bow and two arrows, a sword and a set of armor,” Pridgen said.

Guffrie, a craftsman and bass player with Whiskey River Pandhandlers, will show his works in progress as he creates and repairs guitars.

“I imagine some people will want to pick up one of his guitars and give it a try,” Pawlowski said.

Stiffler says he can’t find enough hours in the day to use all of the clock parts and vintage pieces for his jewelry and steam engine depictions.

“His son, Todd, paints to capture, through his art, the ‘tiny moment between the mundane and the chaotic,’ ” Pawlowski said.
