Parishioners at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 211 Powell Ave., Cresson, have been celebrating the church’s 100th anniversary for the past year.

A Mass of Thanksgiving to be celebrated at 3 p.m. Sunday will close the centennial festivities.

The Most Rev. Joseph V. Adamec, bishop of the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese, will be the celebrant.

The date for the Mass is exactly 100 years from the church’s Mass of Dedication on Sept. 20, 1909.

An RSVP dinner will follow at the Cosgrave Center on the campus of Mount Aloysius College, Cresson.

The time capsule will be buried again for another 25 years after today’s 4 p.m. Mass.

During the past year, monthly activities included a garage sale, a booth at Heritage Days, a car wash, bake sales, a swim party and family outings to see the Altoona Curve and visit DelGrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton.

The church’s newly remodeled Centennial Hall also was dedicated.

A DVD, “The First 100 Years,” and Christmas cards printed with various scenes at the church throughout the years are available for purchase by calling the parish office at 886-2374.

Poll

A Berks County lawmaker has sponsored legislation that would eliminate Pennsylvania’s township, borough and city governments and would make counties responsible for roads, police, fire and other services. Do you support this concept?

No, I do not support eliminating municipal governments.
Yes, I support shifting responsibility to counties.
Maybe - It is a starting point for moving toward a better system than we have now.
