Vintage party

The ninth annual Art of Wine and Fashion fundraiser, “SAMA Speakeasy,” will be held at 7 tonight at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, 1210 11th Ave., Altoona.

The fundraiser will begin with a champagne reception, hors d’oeuvres and live music at the museum, then move next door to The Columns for a buffet dinner, silent auction, wine samplings and a fashion show featuring vintage ensembles.

Strike up the band

A free concert will be presented by the 78th U.S. Army Band at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, 326 Napoleon St., downtown Johnstown.

The band has 46 musicians broken down into several performance groups, including a concert band, stage band, marching band, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, jazz combo, rock band, Dixieland band and buglers.

They perform classical, concert, marches and patriotic, pop and jazz music.

No tickets are required for the concert.

Young actors

An adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” will be presented by the Kids on Stage group at Community Arts Center of Cambria County at 11 a.m. Saturday at Westmont Middle School, 827 Diamond Blvd.

Memorable benefit

The third annual Heather’s Cup, a fundraiser in memory of Heather Miller, will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Chestnut Ridge High School, 2588 Quaker Valley Road, Fishertown.

There will be football games between fourth- and sixth-grade teams from Berlin, Chestnut Ridge, Central, Ferndale, Meyersdale, Northern Bedford, Tussey Mountain and Westmont.

The day also will feature cheerleading, a kid’s carnival, basket raffle, sports memorabilia raffles, concessions and baked goods, a balloon release and prayer circle and child fingerprinting and IDs.

Proceeds will benefit Heather’s Haven and 10-year-old Tyler Lafferty of Buffalo Mills, who suffered second- and third- degree burns over 30 percent of his body last year.

Songs in harmony

“A Class Act!” will be presented by the Altoona Chorus of Sweet Adelines at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Altoona Area Junior High School auditorium, 1400 Seventh Ave., Altoona.

Their featured guest is Capri Quartet from the Baltimore area, known for their comedy skits and award-winning sound.

Four local quartets from the Altoona Chorus also will perform.

Saturday’s musical performances will include acoustic guitarist and vocalist Chuck Catalamessa from noon to 2 p.m., the Harold Betters Quartet from 3 to 5 p.m. and vocalist Jessica Zamiska and pianist John Olearchick at 6.

An autumn wine dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Clock Tower Restaurant.

“A Conversation with George III” will be presented by John R. Hamant of Colonial Williamsburg at 7 p.m. Thursday at Fort Ligonier Museum.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Coronation of George III, known as America’s last king.

Hamant’s lifelong interest in history prompted him to turn from a full-time acting career to the educational efforts of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Eyeing nature

“Nature Through The Eyes of the Artist,” a fine art exhibition showcasing the fragility and simple beauty found in nature, will be on display through Nov. 12 at Art Works in Johnstown, 413 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

The works of Jane Hyland, Mark Klingler, Bill Paxton and Terry Smith will be featured.

These artists share a passion for nature and the natural sciences.

Juried exhibition

The 79th annual juried exhibition of the Allied Artists of Johnstown will be on display through Dec. 2 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of Pitt-Johnstown, Richland Township.

This year’s exhibit features 51 works from 28 artists and also will feature two works which pay special tribute to Allied Artists members who have passed away this year.

‘Tried and True’ works

“Tried and True: Artists of the Greatest Generation” will be on display through Dec. 9 at the Margery Wolf-Kuhn Gallery at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto on the campus of St. Francis University.

The new exhibit has more than 50 pieces, featuring the works of William Baziotes, William Gropper, Herman Maril, Reginald Marsh and Norman Rockwell.

“Tibetan Treasures: The Rezk Collection of Tibetan and Nepalese Art” will be on display through Jan. 28 at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto.

The exhibition comes from the museum’s permanent collection and is one of the major collections of Tibetan and Nepalese art in the United States.

Ligonier display

“Animal House: Works by Helen Gorsuch and George R. Wazenegger” will be on display through Sunday at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley, One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South in Ligonier.

The exhibition features a total of 81 works, 31 ceramic sculptures by Gorsuch and 50 collage works by Wazenegger.

Inspired by nature, religions, mythology, classical pottery and ancient and folk cultures, Gorsuch’s ceramic works are often satirical comments on human behavior.

Wazenegger’s mixed media wood collage architectural creations are a playful exploration of color and form.

His work showcases dream-like depictions of lighthouses, farms and cottages, each structure accompanied by its own colorful impressionistic landscape.

Dual exhibit

 “Artists in Our Midst,” an annual juried exhibition, will be on display through Jan. 7 at the Shirley and Fred A. Pechter Gallery and the George A. and Herbert T. Wolf Gallery at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona, 1210 11th Ave.

The exhibit will highlight local and regional artists who are members of Art in Common, an arts organization based in central Pennsylvania.

 With more than 50 works created by 36 artists, the exhibit showcases a variety of media, including photography, watercolor, pastel, oil, clay and mixed media.

 “Phillip Chan: Fallen Angels” will be on display through Jan. 14 at the George A. and Herbert L. Wolf Gallery at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona.

The exhibition features 40 works and celebrates Chan’s contemplative and provocative Fallen Angels series, which employs elusive forms and complex configurations.
