Contemporary Christian band Casting Crowns will bring its Come to the Well Tour to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, 326 Napoleon St., downtown Johnstown, at 7 p.m. Thursday.
“Come to the Well” is the band’s fifth studio album, and is an appeal to Christians to let the living water of Christ well up and overflow.
Front man Mark Hall said the title track illuminates the album’s main theme.
“She thought she was standing by a well talking to a man, but really she was standing by a hole in the ground talking to the well,” Hall said on the band’s website.
“We come to Jesus, and we have already got our well. We have already got what we think is going to sustain us, and we come to him to bless our thing, so our thing will work even better for us. Jesus isn’t a sprinkle. He is life. That’s the central teaching moment of the record.”
Radio hits from the CD include “Courageous,” “Just Another Birthday” and “Jesus, Friend of Sinners.”
Along with Hall on lead vocals, the band features Juan DeVevo on lead guitar; Hector Cervantes on rhythm guitar; Melodee DeVevo on violin and backing vocals; Megan Garrett on piano; Chris Huffman on bass guitar; and Brian Scroggin on drums.
Casting Crowns began as a student worship band in 1999 in Daytona Beach, Fla. Led by Hall, who is a youth pastor, the group relocated to Stockbridge, Ga., in 2001, and added members.
Four members of the band currently minister at Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church in McDonough, Ga., where they play during the contemporary service Sunday mornings.
In addition to playing in the church band part time, they mentor teens full time.
Hall’s fundamental message to the band’s audience is clear.
“I want to shake people up and help them see that Jesus is not a religion, and God is not a book,” Hall said.
“You can’t pray to a book, and you can’t draw strength from an idea or standard. If there’s no relationship with Jesus as a person to you, you’re in trouble. It’s about life, not religion. It’s about relationships, not books.”
In addition to winning numerous Christian Dove Awards, Casting Crowns has grabbed the attention of the secular music scene by being voted favorite contemporary inspirational artist in 2011 at the American Music Awards and top Christian artist and top Christian album for “Come to the Well” at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.
The concert also will feature Britt Nicole, Group 1 Crew and Royal Tailor.
