Noise in a library is frowned upon – except when it’s for a worthy cause.
The Cambria County Library will be alive with music during its seventh annual “A Little Night Music @ the Library” fundraiser.
Three floors of the normally tranquil library will be brimming with live music from 7 to 9:30 p.m. April 30 at the facility, 248 Main St. in downtown Johnstown.
This year, there will be three genres of music – Broadway, Celtic and country.
Lyn Meek, director of the Cambria County Library System, said “A Little Night Music” is unusual because there’s so much noise in the library on that particular Friday night that it is poles apart from the generally quiet space.
“The decision has been made to conduct the event on the last Friday of April in order for people to use it as a reminder,” Meek said.
Country music will be provided by Pittsburgh’s Broken Spoke. The band will play on the library’s first floor.
Bob Lacovic and Friends will present a Broadway Revue throughout the evening on the second floor.
The Michael O’Brian Band will be the featured act on the third floor.
Normally, the event raises between $6,000 and $7,000, and attracts as many as 300 people.
“We view this as much more than a fundraiser,” Meek said.
“It’s an opportunity to get people to come through the doors and see what the library offers.”
Mary Lou Repsher, event chairwoman and former reference librarian, said proceeds will be used to replace 34 monitors of the public access computers throughout the library.
“With such a bad winter, we literally wore out our snowblower, so we’re also hoping to purchase a new one with some of the money,” Repsher said.
Broken Spoke returns to the library for the second consecutive year.
“Country proved popular last year,” Repsher said.
“Things got pretty loud as members of Broken Spoke mingled among the people while playing and got them up from their seats.
“A big hit was the group’s country fiddler.”
Meek said people get caught up in the music and dance “where they want, when the want.”
The event began as a way to raise money to increase a local library’s music collection.
As vinyl records went by the wayside, and taped cassettes proved short-lived, the library didn’t expand its musical library until CD technology justified it.
“We started by offering musical sound tracks since many local schools were asking to hear the programs to determine if they could tackle it for their own productions,” Repsher said.
“We now boast over 2,300 CDs, and it’s one of our most popular collections we offer.”
The library’s collection includes country rock and three categories of folk music: U.S., world and Celtic.
Friends of the Cambria County Library will hold its usual basket auction in the lobby.
Art students in the Greater Johnstown and Ferndale Area school districts will paint the interior windows of the library in the styles of the musical genres that will be performed on each floor.
Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, which includes entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, beverages and the chance to socialize.
For the second year, tickets will be available at the door or online at www.cclsys.org.
“We have found that many people don’t decide to come until the last minute,” Repsher said.
“They either had a change of plans or just read some publicity that draws them to our event.”
